Safe boating

Bulli Beach is located in the Illawarra just over 1-hour drive south of Sydney Airport and about 12 km north of Wollongong. With almost 1km in length it is a fantastic place to spend time. Not far to the south is Bellambi boat ramp providing lots of parking as well as sheltered launching and retrieval facilities for the growing boating community. Visiting Bulli Beach and the Illawarra is great fun, but – first and foremost – it should be safe.

Unfortunately - we as a surf club – usually get involved when things have gone wrong.

So, if you are planning to take out your boat and spend time on the water please make sure that

  • Your boat is suited to be out on the ocean, looks from the shore can be deceiving at times and make the water appear calmer than it is in reality

  • Your boat and all its equipment is sea worthy and in good working order, including having sufficient fuel on board

  • You familiarise yourself with the area, especially rock formations and reefs, as well as weather conditions, currents and tides before you leave, weather conditions can change drastically and very quickly

  • You tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back

  • There are only as many persons on board as the boat is rated to carry

  • YOU and EVERY PASSENGER on board ALWAYS wear an appropriate life jacket

General boating safety advice is readily available, e.g. on the Marine Rescue NSW website.

In case of an emergency or if you think someone is missing call ‘000’.
