Surf Rescue Certificate
To become a lifesaver the first award gained is the Surf Rescue Certificate. The Surf Rescue Certificate is a stepping stone to the Bronze Medallion that is generally the minimum standard required for full patrolling duties. The Surf Rescue Certificate was originally intended for young people aged between 13 and 15 years, however, anyone over the age of 13 can qualify at this level.

Bronze Medallion
The Bronze Medallion provides participants with the skills and knowledge of patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations. This is the core award to be a surf lifesaver in Australia. Once a member has obtained their Bronze Medallion they are assigned to a patrol and become eligible to compete in surf lifesaving carnivals if they wish. They must complete an annual skills maintenance session to continue to patrol and compete in surf lifesaving carnivals.
