VALE - KEITH 'COCKY' CALDWELL

It is with the greatest sadness that Bulli SLSC announce the death of Keith ‘Cocky’ Caldwell, our Club President for the last 17 years, on the 30th May 2021 at 5:47pm. Keith passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Maria, Jamie, Alicia, Natalie, and Catherine in the Intensive Care Unit of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. Keith will forever be remembered as a loving husband, dad, poppy, mate, and mentor.

The family and our Club are heartbroken at this time and yet we take tremendous pride in the fact that Keith leaves a legacy that will endure for many years to come.

Keith spent his entire life in the service of others. He loved and protected this community with over 30 years of service in the NSW Police Force and a lifetime with us in the Surf Life Saving movement. He was a Life Member of not only Bulli SLSC, but of Surf Life Saving Illawarra, Surf Life Saving NSW, and in 2021 was recognised as a Life member of Surf Life Saving Australia These accolades however are no measure of his true greatness. He was an inspiring leader who has been described as ‘the best team manager’ that Surf Lifesaving has ever known. Keith embodied the notion that teams, clubs, and organisations thrive on people connecting with one another. In knowing this, he constantly drew out the best in people regardless of who they were.

"It's not what you take when you leave this world behind you,
it's what you leave behind you when you go" - Randy Travis

A message from Jamie Caldwell on behalf of the Caldwell family:

Family, friends and wider community;

Maria, Natalie and myself together with our families invite you to join us in celebrating the outstanding life of Keith ‘Cocky’ Caldwell. The service and wake will both be held at Kembla Grange Racecourse on Friday June 11, 2021 beginning at 1.30pm. As a family we encourage everyone to wear colour to the service especially any surf life saving members to wear their club colours. The wake will be an opportunity to catch up with friends, share stories about Keith and have a good time well into the night like he would want us to do!

Further details in relation to the service and wake will be published mid next week. We would like to thank our family, friends and the wider community for the outpouring of support and love, it really is greatly appreciated and gives us great comfort knowing the amount of people Keith has had a positive effect on.

To carry on the positive impact Keith has had in the community, the Caldwell Family together with trusted friends would like to announce the establishment of the Keith ‘Cocky’ Caldwell Memorial Scholarship! We would respectfully ask that in lieu of flowers, donations of any amount be made to the fund which will support youth and young adults achieve goals in life via annual scholarships which will provide both mentorship and financial support.

To make a donation and view further details please view: https://gofund.me/a1ec344c

Red & Yellow Flags come down for another season

RED & YELLOW FLAGS - SEASON END

Thank you very much patrol teams 3 & 5 for completing our last rostered patrols on ANZAC Day yesterday. Thank you also to all members who organised and accepted shift swaps.

Weather and conditions were beautiful in the morning, but it got overcast, windy and chilly in the afternoon with only a few beach visitors and swimmers around throughout the day.

So that's a wrap ... the 2020-21 patrolling season done and dusted marking our 108th season of ' NO LIVES LOST ON BULLI BEACH' whilst our surf club members are on patrol. 108 yrs proud

Some interesting statistics for the season showed between 93 members rostered across 7 teams plus many additional volunteers a total of

- 3,972 Patrolling hours performed

- 94 Rescues

- 2,017 Preventative actions

- 63 First aid provisions

- 5 Emergency callouts

were performed between 27 September 2020 and 25 April 2021.

Thank you so much to everyone who put on the red & yellow uniform & patrolled Bulli Beach this season and who has helped to keep beach visitors safe. Your passion, dedication and professionalism are greatly appreciated and have been recognised....well done

Thank you also to SLSI Duty Officer Coordinator Jamie Caldwell for - again - towing our patrol equipment trailer including SLSI support ski 3 on and off the beach while our SSV is still at the workshop.

Lastly a shout out to the 20 members of the Emergency Callout Team, who continue to make themselves available for responses to emergency incidents during after hours & now make themselves available 24/7 during the off season leading back into surf patrols starting again in September 2021.

Thankyou to our Director of Life Saving Markus Meier-Lindner, Life Saving Officer Jamie Thorpe , Support Services Officer Dave Kohler (ATV/IRB Capt), Club Emergency Service Coordinator Jamie Caldwell & our Patrol Captains for leading the way in lifesaving matters this season...a job well done, great volunteers in our club.

Club assists inland community's with a donation of surf boat, oars & trailer to local school

A post from Ian Backhouse (school teacher former member of Thirroul SLSC). Our surf club supported this activity with management committee agreeing to donate one of our older surf boats, trailer & oars!

Our surf club supporting communities in outback inland NSW

First ever Balranald Surf Carnival

The school ran their first ever “Surf”Carnival on Lake Benanee 75kms west of Balranald on Friday 19 March 2021.

It was a huge success with events such as flags, beach sprints, swims, kayak racing, iron man and woman and the highlight of the day three surf boat races. Open Boys Boat was won by Mungo House, Open Girls Boat won by Yenga House and Junior Boat won by Mungo House.

A big hearty thank you to the Boat Captains of clubs who donated second hand equipment to the Balranald Central School to make this possible. The event will be held first term every year from now on. Students from Balranald Central School hope to be attending surf awareness training and attaining their Surf Life Saving qualifications on an excursion to the Illawarra in Term 4

Bulli SLSC – donated a surf boat, rowlocks, trailer and oars

Austinmer SLSC – donated a surf boat, rowlocks, trailer and oars

Gerringong SLSC – donated a couple of sweep oars and some rowlocks

Whale Beach SLSC – donated a set of oars

The community at Balranald turned out in numbers and were delighted by the nature of the event especially the skills associated with rowing surf boats.

2021 SLSNSW Boat Championships cancelled due to weather & surf conditions

STATE BOAT CHAMPIONSHIPS CANCELLED

Unfortunately a tough decision has been made by SLSNSW & Surf Boat Panel.

Due to terrible conditions, including surf, wind, rain and flood warnings - they were simply left with no suitable options to hold a state carnival. Safety of all concerned was the priority.

For all those wondering :

- The beach has been closed by council (likely all weekend) - cannot row there.

- The backup option is now under flood warning - not suitable to row

- The third option to row within the breakwall was not suitable to hold a carnival due to the floods and the fierce tides and uneven racing.

Dealing with multiple organisations as well including NSW Public Health, Local Council including lifeguards, NSW Maritime & NSW Police....it wasnt easy. Unfortunately with flood warnings around the Greater Newcastle area, advice for people not to travel to the area...the final decision was made.

Yes disappointing but there were absolutely no other options.

Some of our members were already here (Masters & Res Women)...our U19 Men & Open Men were to travel up yesterday.

Those here went & supported Swansea Belmont SLSC on Friday arvo.

Stay safe everybody & travel safe.

Latest update is another possible date 10-11 April...is being looked at in Greater Sydney area...stay tuned

Maroon & Gold Cap dominates at 2021 SLSI Branch Championships (Juniors & Seniors)

#// SURF SPORTS ...wasn't it great to be able to have a surf carnival

ILLAWARRA BRANCH SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS wash up from the weekend Thirroul Surf Life Saving Club

Contrasting surf & weather conditions made it interesting for all involved.

Firstly on the Saturday our lively band of nippers & parents battled through strong winds, consistent rain & testing surf...well done to the kids, you all had a go first timers in some age groups, medals won for the first time in individual & team events.

Sunday saw our seniors & masters (really only a small team approx 25)...shine big time, it looked like maroon & gold caps everywhere, surf was up & a big day of individual races & teams events. Good hit out for upcoming State Champs.

Boats are not racing until March, so official point-score won't be published until then, but we have 6 crews racing so good results are expected to increase our tally of points.

Club hosts SLSNSW Albert Training Program

Our beach, our members, our club shines over the weekend.

How good was it for our club to host members of 9 surf life saving clubs in Illawarra (25 lifesavers) over 1.5days improving their IRB (inflatable rescue boat skills) conducted by the SLSNSW ALBERT Program.

The program consists of theory and practical skills an array of search and rescue skills, search patterns, patient pickups, rescuing patients from surf zones, rock ledge entries, driving & crewing skills to name a few.

We had 4 members doing the program & feed back is they got heaps out of it....thanks guys for attending the program.

Thankyou to the 10 SLS instructors from around NSW for sharing their valuable information and skills to local lifesavers. Cheryl McCarthy & Damien Woods you guys rock .

IRB'S (inflatable rescue boats), ATVS (All Terrace Vehicles) UAV (drone), RWCS (jetskis) resources utilised over the weekend. Thankyou to the clubs that participated & bought resources over the weekend.

SLSI Duty Officers involved in Search & Rescue scenario.

Lastly thankyou to our small team of volunteers who helped coordinate this event, you know who you are, valuable members doing good!

Jonathan Crowe - former Uncle Toby's Ironman joins the club with his family

Great news....Welcome to the club Jonathan Crowe.

Crowey or Jono is a former elite Ironman who is going to compete with our Masters group at Branch State & Aussies this season.

Jonathan's profile reads like this (heaps more not enough room);

- 90's Uncle Toby's Iron Man

- 91/92 Rd 1 winner Uncle Toby's Series

- former World Ironman Champ

- Coolangatta Gold winner

- has won NSW & AUS titles including Ironman, Taplin Relay & Ski Relay when competing for North Wollongong back in the day.

In 1996 starred in an episode of Baywatch with David Hasslehoff & Pamela Anderson It was when they took the ironman series over to USA, Crowey had a speaking role on the show along with Guy Andrews & Trevor Hendy.

Jonathan has always had the theory that 'natural talent only gets you so far, hard work takes you further.'

Welcome mate, have fun competing again.

And you know what, Crowey is a good guy as well, family man. Make sure you say hello if you see him around.

Community members thank our patrols for saving their lives!

Community Engagement at our surf club, its nice to be recognised.

Over the past couple of weeks we have had members of the community thank our members in person, on social media about the assistance they have given...whether it be rescues or first aid treatment.

Comments like, " You saved 4 of our family that day thankyou so much" & 'we have gone home today because of you guys, thankyou so much' Another person said 'I'm a strong swimmer but got caught in a rip I don't know what would have happened if your female lifesaver wasn't there. Quite possibly could have been my last day.'

Its what we do but it is nice that people do acknowledge the great work that surf lifesavers do in a voluntary capacity.

2 families have made a donation into our surf bank account for saving their lives...special thankyou

A lady after having a fall near the cycleway prior to patrol starting was given first aid treatment by 2 of our members. Lovely thankyou letter & chocolates.

Another lady who had difficulty breathing whilst leaving the beach was treated by members given Oxygen Theory until NSW Ambulance arrived. She was assessed & aloud to leave the beach with her family. She came back down to the beach a couple of weeks later with a nice gift…Lebanese sweets/treats for our lifesavers.

Well done to all our members, keep up the good work
