2018 Aussie Championships @ Western Australia - results
Here is a wash up of our results at the 2018 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships @ Scarborough Beach Western Australia.
WOW 4 seasons of weather over the week long event, weather & surf forecast of swell increasing, weather conditions including heavy rain, increasing strong winds, lightning/thunder on Sunday....the right decision was made & all events were brought forward to complete on the Saturday. The Australian Surf Life Saving Championship Competition Committee has confirmed that the finals package for the event will be conducted on Saturday 21 April 2018 in light of poor weather conditions forecast for Sunday 22 April.
We thank the athletes, team managers, Scarborough Surf Life Saving Club, City of Stirling, Police and the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) for their input, feedback and support of this decision.
First up we had 5 youth athletes race at the 2018 SLSA Youth Championships at Scarborough Beach WA. All you can ask is to have a go, race hard, respect all & be proud to represent BULLI SLSC. Well Holly Holmesby, Coen Taylor, Max Ottaway, Jeremy Woodford & Lucas Ottaway did what was asked in bucket loads.

Now over to our boats where we had the Open & U23 Men racing. The wash up from the Open Men's boat final...wow what a cluster....2 false starts then malfunction & sounding of starting machine (whilst crews rowing through gate cans it goes off) led to a long time of frustration on the beach for spectators & crews. The guys rowed great looking likely for a 2nd place...but the swell gods had other ideas, bang crash & ultimate spectacular roll causing damage to the boat, battery lost & most importantly the safety & wellfare to our crew. Dean Roberts did suffer an injury (couple of cracked ribs)....Dean is in good spirits
👍Not the best way to finish Aussies, but as someone said...'shit happens'! For the record Bateman's Bay SLSC looked great all weekend along with our guys & deserved their win in the Open Men's final.
Officially our Open Men DNF
🤔
We had a little chat with the Boat Referee
👺to offer our disappointment on 2 false starts & other little after incidents.
Congratulations to all the crews in the Open Boat final...it took a long time.
The club is proud of the boys as always. Big effort guys Shane Geloven (sweep), Dean Roberts, Heath Mercer, Ben Lowe & Fraser Worthington.
Our U23 guys raced well all weeeknd & a bit of luck deserted them in the final, off the beach last, rowed their guts out to get back into the race, but the early effort took its toll, claiming 6th in the final. Well done boys Barry Lowe (sweep), Albert Smeaton, Iszak Lunney, Kyle Mercer & Lachlan O'Grady.
Big thank you to John Allan @ TOLL GROUP, Matthew Murrell @ MURRELLS FREIGHT LINES & PACIFIC NATIONAL for assisting us with the transportation of craft/boats over to WA, it was great apreciated!!
Big thank you to our surf/craft coaches Scott Jones & Jake Hogarth for your efforts through out the season & all of our boat sweeps that assisted during the season.
PS Special mention to Kaimana Fittock, a patrolling member of the club & raced up until the NSW Championships with Bulli SLSC. Kai decided to race for Wanda SLSC at Aussies after we didn't have any other older aged athletes going over to WA (due to national swimming & other commitments) & she really wanted to do team events. What a carnival she had claiming 2 individual & 3 team medals in the U17 & U19 age category. Congratulations Kaimana, well done for your hard training during the season.2019 & 2020 Aussie Championships back on the Gold Coast

‘The Aussies’ is the largest surf sports event of its kind and includes over 7,000 athletes from 311 clubs around the nation competing in more than 400 beach and ocean events. The announcement follows the successful Championships held at Scarborough beach in Western Australia, which concluded today.
Next year’s Masters and Open competitions will be held at Broadbeach Surf Life Saving Club from 1 to 7 April 2019 and the Youth competition will be held at North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club on 30 and 31 March 2019.
Graham Ford AM, President, Surf Life Saving Australia said “the Gold Coast is a world-class location for surf sports and the region’s recent experience hosting the Commonwealth Games means it is an opportune time to return to Queensland.
“Millions of dollars have been spent in the region on public infrastructure and beach facilities, making it an ideal location for the country’s biggest and most prestigious surf sports event.”
Surf sports athletes and coaches including Darren Mercer, Trevor Hendy, Grant Kenny, Jimmy Walker, Peter Spence, Bert Hunt, Kristy Ellis, Harriet Brown, Courtney Hancock, Ali Day and Shannon Eckstein have all thrown their support behind the return and will continue to work in close consultation with SLSA.
According to Ironman Legend Shannon Eckstein, “the Gold Coast has seen some of the sport’s most iconic moments and, as someone who competes on these beaches, I’m really pleased the Aussies has come home. All of the country’s best athletes love competing here.
“The next 12 months will see preparation from competitors, the organising committee and SLSA to deliver this world class event and I am excited to be a part of it through the athlete panel.”
Aussies boost for Gold Coast communities
More than 7,000 competitors are expected to travel to the Gold Coast to attend the Championships next year in April.
City of Gold Coast Mayor, Tom Tate said “It’s wonderful news that The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships are returning to the Gold Coast. This news confirms again that we are way ahead as the home
of events, with more than 7,000 competitors visiting for the Championships. Of course, it makes sense as surf lifesaving is quintessential Gold Coast.”
For Broadbeach Surf Life Saving Club this will be the first time in the club’s 82-year history that it has hosted The Aussies – despite the Championships being held on neighbouring beaches many times in the past.
Wayne McLennan, President, Broadbeach SLSC said “Broadbeach Surf Life Saving Club could not be prouder to host The Aussies next year. This means a lot for our club and for the local community. The Aussies is a great way to bring more people into the area and showcase everything the Gold Coast has to offer.”
Mr McLennan said “some of the world’s best male and female surf sports athletes have had their competitive start on this beach and we’re delighted to host the next crop of Australian champions.”
The Youth Championships will be hosted by North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club, which has long developed some of the country’s best young surf sports athletes – and includes Coolangatta Gold, Elite Series, Branch, State & Australian champions within its ranks.
