Fundraising & Sponsorship 2019-2020

Sponsorship & Fundraising plays an important part in the financial stability of a surf club.

You could only see the excitement when our refurbishment & new extensions to the surf club were completed in 2018.

Hard times...hard yards...loyal supporters & donors helping our cause.

Running a surf club is not cheap...electricity & water rates, insurance for members, club clothing, purchasing vital lifesaving equipment, entries for surf sports events, purchase of surf boats, boards & skis, tents to be used for sun safety whilst on patrol & at community events, purchase of education tools to assist our members in gaining lifesaving awards & the list goes on!!

In these strange times with COVID-19 majority of our loyal sponsors/supporters are struggling. Businesses closed, jobs lost, lives lost...sad times 😢

From our members to our sponsors, stay strong & we hope that you come out the other side of this pandemic & remain a loyal supporter of our surf club.

Please support those who support us🙏

Season 2019-2020 Education Section - highlights

As we all know our season end was thrown into chaos...patrols finish up 5-6 weeks early, Aussie championships called off😪 due to Covid-19.

But for us as a club we still achieved plenty & this post highlights our Education portfolio.

Under the leadership of Jamie Caldwell our Director of Education, members gained new lifesaving awards including Bronze Medallion, Surf Rescue Certificate, Silver Medallion IRB Driver & IRB Crewman certificates, Advanced Resusitation Technique (AID). Also thankyou to SLSI for facilitating a couple of courses our members attended.

Skills Maintenance sessions (proficiency) were held for our patrolling lifesavers, surf sports athletes, nippers water safety members.

Plus of course our nippers obtaining their respective surf skills certificates at the start of the season.

All of the above has necessary paperwork to complete & information entered into the surfguard data base.

Jamie led his education team in a professional manner, delivering courses in a timely manner, the team worked well together sharing the load to achieve good results, using trainers & content experts to assist in delivering programs.

We have some well qualified volunteer lifesavers❤💛

2019-2020 Life Saving - highlights

With these strange times with Covid-19 we have been highlighting areas within our surf club & how the season unfolded. We have 2 areas to comment on...Life Saving & Surf Sports are 2 big areas where our members shine.

Today's post is about Lifesaving, our core volunteer business. Lead expertly by our Director of Life Saving Markus Meier-Lindner, his leadership & guidance to all the patrol teams is outstanding. Our equipment is always rescue ready, communication to our members is first rate.

Today should have been the last day of season 2019/2020 patrolling our beach, but instead we pulled the red & yellow flags down 5-6 weeks ago due to Covid-19.

There is no better feeling than pulling on the red & yellow patrol uniform making sure the community is safe whilst visiting Bulli Beach. The mateship & interaction between our members when on patrol builds a great culture.

We still have the proud history of 107 years our members patrol the beach & no lives lost!

Our Top 10 members with patrol hours this season were;

Paul Brightwell 93.5hrs
Jay Townsend 72.25hrs
Jamie Thorpe 65.5hrs
David Kohler 63.75hrs
Markus Meier-Lindner 59hrs
Dean Dudley 58hrs
Christine Churchill 55.5hrs
Callum Sweeny 55.5hrs
Glen Meznaric 51.75hrs
Jason Colquhoun 50.75hrs

To all our Patrol Captains & patrolling members thankyou for your service this season. Bring on next season ❤💛

Anzac Day 'Lest We Forget'

LEST WE FORGET

Today is a very special day in the history of our nation. We honour those who over many decades went to war so we could live the life we live now. Many paid the ultimate sacrifice with their own life💔

Please at some point today reflect for a moments silence in honour of our HEROES that fought for this country and the armed forces personnel that continue to keep us safe.

We have had many members (and still do) that have served in the armed forces...thankyou thankyou!

We are normally on patrol, lifesavers on the beach this day, but this year is very different due to covid-19.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

A message from SLSA

#ANZACDay is one of our most important national occasions and this year was to have taken on extra significance for our surf lifesaving community, with a special commemorative service planned to be held at Broadbeach as part of our 2020 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships on the morning of April 25, with competition not scheduled to begin until the afternoon.
The present circumstances and times we live in due to COVID-19 has prevented this service from taking place, as well as many of the traditional activities that our surf clubs host across the country to commemorate ANZAC Day. However, I am sure that our humanitarian spirit and approach to life, will see us find other ways to appropriately remember and commemorate.
As surf lifesavers, our job is to protect, to save and preserve lives and when the call has come over the years to serve and protect our country in war, surf lifesavers have volunteered by the thousands.
At this time of year I take the time to reflect and read through the “Those Who Served, Surf Lifesavers at War” written by Stan Vesper - the book lists over 8000 members of surf clubs who have served in wars over the years of which almost 700, lost their lives.
Their commitment and selfless contribution to our nation is both admirable and inspiring and so emblematic of surf lifesavers and the communities they serve(d).
On behalf of Surf Life Saving Australia I wish to thank and acknowledge all who have, or are presently serving our country and I would encourage all Members to take a moment on ANZAC day to remember the people who have dedicated themselves to the safekeeping of our country and way of life.
I, like thousands of other Australians will tomorrow morning at 6am be taking a moment to remember those who served and sacrificed.

COVID-19 update

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) UPDATES & RESOURCES FOR SLSNSW MEMBERS

SLSNSW is committed to ensuring the safety and well being of our members, and with the current Coronavirus emergency continuing to escalate, we feel it is important to provide as much information to you that is relevant in your role as lifesavers, emergency first responders and community members.

Event Impacts Due to Coronavirus:

Due to the NSW Government’s Public Health Order to cancel all events and gatherings of 500 people or more, the following events have been cancelled or postponed.

Please refer to the Surf Life Saving NSW website for the most up-to-date event information.

IRB Championships
These championships that were scheduled to be commenced on 3 May 2020 have been postponed. SLSNSW will be developing an alternate proposed schedule for these events to be run later in the year - dependent on advice provided by the authorities.

Pool Rescue Championships
This event was scheduled for July 2020. As these events attract over 500 participants, these events have been cancelled to comply with the NSW Government mass gathering directions. This will be reviewed later this year and decision made to whether to reinstate based on advice provided by the authorities.

SLSNSW Board Riding Championships
This event was scheduled to be held in August 2020. It has now been cancelled.

Junior Lifesaver of the Year (JLOTY) & Youth Opportunity Maker (YOM) Development Programs
These programs that were scheduled for April 2020 have been postponed with a decision to reinstate at a later time this year - if possible. This will be informed by advice provided by the authorities.

SLSNSW State Club Conference
This conference was scheduled to be held in July 2020. As this event attracts greater than 500 participants, a decision has been made to postpone this event to comply with the NSW government mass gathering directions. An alternate date will be set and communicated to all members once we ascertain the appropriate time to hold this.

SLSNSW Awards of Excellence
This event was scheduled to be held in August 2020. A decision has been made to postpone the awards function. Nominations will still continue to be called for and submitted to celebrate the incredible work and value surf lifesavers provide to the community. We will review when we may be able to hold this function later this year, but again this will be dependent on advice provided by the authorities.

At club level we have put on hold our Awards/Presentation Night, our Annual General Meeting until further notice.

Also unfortunately we have had to cancel this years MND Walk, Soul Fit Kids Fun Run & Heart Foundation/Cancer Council Bowls Day with the relevant organisers.

BULLI MEMBERS - Covid-19 update of our premises

Dear Community & Members,

Our Board of Directors have been monitoring the situation with COVID-19 (Coronavirus) & the possible impact on our members & activities at our surf club.

By now you would have seen the large number of postponements and cancellations that have been announced in response to the global pandemic of COVID-19.

In order to ensure the safety of members and the general community during these challenging times, and being guided by our governing bodies, BULLI SLSC has unfortunately had to enact the following measures as from today until 1 May as Australian Government has just announced.

We will continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis & endeavour to keep our members up to speed with the situation & any changes that may alter our decisions. This is a changing & challenging environment with varying measures happening on a daily basis.

• Our Junior Activities (Nippers) had already finished for the season & presentation completed

• No club surf sports training will take place.

• Any upcoming club education courses have been postponed.

• No club activities to take place prior to the end of season.

• Club gym will be closed until further notice. Our Director of Administration has been sending out text members to gym users that access will be denied as of now.

• Our club function room will be closed for all functions until further notice. Functions already booked will receive full refunds.

• End of season debrief functions are on hold for Life Saving & Surf Sports sections.

• Annual Presentation Awards Night date to be looked at & will advise.

• Members please limit your time attending our surf club premises for non essential lifesaving activities.

• Our lifesaving patrols will continue for the present time (patrols finish on 26 April) however patrols have been advised to enact social distancing measures to reduce the likelihood of viral transmission.

• In consultation with our DOL Markus Meier-Lindner, Patrol Captains may choose to scale down the number of patrolling members to reduce the risk of exposure to members, so long as we can meet the minimum patrol numbers as per our Lifesaving Service Agreement and SOP LS3.2 Lifesaving Service Requirements. Our members should liaise with their Patrol Captains if they are unable to attend their patrols when rostered.

• Patrol Captains have been advised of the SLS operational procedures for dealing with suspected cases of coronavirus in a separate email from SLSNSW.

• All members are reminded to practice regular handwashing with soap and water.

• Reminder for all members if you are feeling unwell, have a dry cough, have a high temperature or showing signs of flu like symptoms PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THE SURF CLUB.

Our Board of Directors are focussed on making our club environment safe for our members & the community. These measures above we believe are in the best interests of our members, Bulli Surf Life Saving Club & the community.

We thank you for your understanding during this difficult time and encourage you to remain connected to the club via our online channels (Facebook, email, our webpage and Instagram).

In the meantime, stay safe.

Regards
Keith Caldwell

Geraldine Miller - Life Membership Surf Life Saving Australia

As we all know the COVID-19 has taken a grip on the economy...so thought we might add a positive story ..as was mentioned a couple of weeks ago Geraldine Miller was awarded Life Membership of Surf Life Saving Australia.

Massive honour as Geraldine was part of our surf club from 2001 to 2008 & we actually submitted the nomination.

So to our members here's a bit of an insight into Geraldine's involvement in surf life saving;

- member of Shoalhaven Heads, North Curl Curl & Bulli
- first female to gain Level 3 surf sports coach accreditation
- first female to coach & manager Australian Surf Life Saving teams (2003)
- coached & managed NSW & NSW Country teams
- coach of BULLI SLSC teams to World Championships 2002 Daytona Beach USA, 2004 Viareggio ITALY & Lorne AUSTRALIA
- during her coaching at Bulli we won a collection of medals NSW 97 AUSTRALIAN 33 WORLD 20

Geraldine was a trailblazer for women in surf life saving, self confessed book worm, didn't get her bronze, learnt from some of the best coaches to become one of the best coaches in Australia.

She ran many nipper clinics, facilitated at senior coaching courses, she was also a Level 2 strength & conditioning coach. She spoke at numerous high performance camps (NSW & AUS). She also held roles of officials advisor at State & National Championships.

Her biggest strength was her ability to positively influence the lives of children & adolescents. She thrived on helping young people reach their full potential as athletes & as human beings. Her athletes presented her with a plaque in 2005 & the headline sums it up...'Life Coach, Coach of a Lifetime'. She had a unique & calming perspective which enhanced confidence in athletes, officials & anyone who meet her.

There is heaps more, other roles that she took on in surf life saving...but I'm sure this gives you an insight into the lady we know as Gezza 😀

It was nice to catch up with Geraldine at our nippers presentation. Club President Keith Caldwell acknowledging Geraldine 👏📸 & presenting her with some little gifts.

Again congratulations Geraldine....well deserved.

Season 2019-2020 Junior Activities Section (Nippers)

Hmm this season was a strange one for so many reasons, it wasn't a great summer with fires, floods, weather & surf conditions impacting a fair bit on surf club activities...then throw on top the season finishing early due to COVID-19...wow!

But you know what as a club we still had a great season & would like to highlight some of our activities, starting with our Junior Activities Section.

Led by Junior Chairperson Josh Woodford the committee worked really hard to make sure all families enjoyed their experience, culminating in Presentation Day at the surf club before this virus closed everything down!

So for those that couldn't make it, here is a wrap from Junior Presentation;

☆ Most Improved Water Girl Tahlie Oxman - always at training, improved out of sight, top 10 at Sydney Water Series & 3 finals at State

☆ Best Female (carnival competitor) Madison Jones - was last year most improved then continued this season with outstanding Sydney Water Series, Illawarra rep & even better State titles

2020 Aussies cancelled due to Covid-19

Hi all Bulli athlete's, coaches & supporters

By now everybody would of heard that this years 2020 Youth, Masters and Open Australian Championships have been cancelled.

This wasn't just a snap decision by SLSA. They had been receiving advice from the Australian Government & many associated agencies in relation to the possible effects of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on these major championships. It was a very hard decision but one they believe is in the best interests of surf life saving athletes & the wider community. Its not just lining up & off we go in a surf race, boat race etc. There is a lot of logistics to plan, risk management with this world wide issue, which is taking traction in Australia.....with 6,000 competitors, plus parents, supporters etc.

Many major sporting events world wide have been cancelled.

We are understandbly disappointed, especially our athletes in what they would be experiencing at this present time.

Every athlete has put in the hard yards in training & to see the end of season taken away from you, it's devastating. This can be mentally draining. If you need to chat to anyone, any of of management team is available🙏

Yes its a set back, regroup & now refocus....stay strong & become even more determined next season as an athlete to be the best!

Massive thankyou to all our coaches & managers for your commitment to our athletes, we know you are all disappointed as well.

Remember we still need to finish the season off strong.... lifesaving is still happening with patrols, so please make sure you fulfill your voluntary duties to finish off the season (Sunday 26 April).

We hope to have an end of season get together for lifesaving & surf sports...stay tuned for details out soon.
