Search & Rescue Kit - Life Saving
Through our Director of Life saving Markus Meier-Lindner we have developed a SEARCH & RESCUE KIT to be on hand at Bull SLSC..
A very big ‘thank you’ to Bulli Sea Lions Winter Swimming Club for the kind donation of $1,000 that has been put to very good use - a brand new Search & Rescue Kit.
This kit, together with a newly developed SAR Guideline will help to enhance our capability, efficiency and member safety when we conduct searches for missing persons in the water. Hopefully we never have to use it.
This kit helps us further develop our search & rescue capability in a focus area for lifesaving for the 2020-21 season.
Thank you very much also to our club sponsor Finz for the donation of 6 pairs of goggles for this new kit, it is appreciated!
BULLI SLSC - Covid Safe Club
Recently we had a working group meeting discussing our Covid-19 Safe Plans for this coming season. with members engaging in various activities that require a Covid-19 Safe Plan to be formalised.
Part of those discussions we agreed that the club would provide extra Covid Safety Kits which contain PPE items and hygiene products.
These kits will assist our members in COVID safe practices while being active for the surf club.
Big thankyou to Responder 1 who arranged these kits at a good price. We have 6 kits labelled for lifesaving x 3, junior activities, surf/craft & boat sections.
Thankyou to SLSNSW for the extra Covid box supplied to all clubs as well.
We are a Covid Safe Club
SURF SPORTS OFFICIALS - Volunteers required
Covid-19 has impacted the Surf Life Saving organisation & our club will endeavour to make sure that SLSNSW recommendations along with NSW Public Health regulations are followed to make such every members health & welfare is looked after.
Today is about becoming a SURF SPORTS OFFICIAL for season 2020/2021 & beyond.
Please take the time firstly to read this post & secondly one parent from each family hopefully putting their hand up to assist if your kid/s will be competing in surf sports.
When we get to major championships there is a requirement from the governing body to have clubs assisting with water safety, power craft duties & officials, let alone the clubs obligation to have Team Manager's at these events. One person cannot do all of these roles (even though they might hold all the qualifications) & it's unfair if we as a club thinks this is the way it happens.
Our Management Committee has just been elected but to make the season work they will come up with protocols to manage our surf sports participation with the current COVID restrictions & advice from SLSNSW. BUT in saying that we are going to need more qualified helpers this year than ever before seen at our club.
You will become a Core or Technical Official.
In saying that we really need to have more members do this course etc as some of our leading officials (putting it nicely) are getting on in years, we really need to be planning for the future. Officials play an important part within our organisation & are integral to the ongoing delivery of our sport. Without officials our sport just simply would not function for our participants.
If you are a parent, carer or guardian & are interested in assisting with the upcoming 2020-2021 Nipper Season (COVID restrictions pending of course), as an OFFICIAL please contact Kate Morris (Junior Secretary) or Maria Caldwell (Club Administration Officer) or comment your interest below & we will be in touch.
So here's what you need to do to help our club in the process for SURF SPORTS OFFICIAL qualification;
• Register & pay membership for season 2020-2021 www.bullisurfclub.com.au/registration
• Complete Working with Children Check (WWCC) http://wwwwkidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/.../working-with... Once WWCC number has been received please forward this to the club to enter into surf guard
• it will also cost $60 to complete the course which the club will reimburse our members
• Need to complete the AIS Introductory Level Officiating General Principles Course ..register https://www.ausport.gov.au/.../officials/onlineofficial
• Go into https://members.sls.com.au
Log in using your username and password
Select the eLearning drop down menu
Select the RED Log In to eLearning tab
Select training library
Select view courses SLS - Surf Sports Official
• Once the Online components are completed face to face learning & assessment will take place
It seems a lot but it's not hard & any person above 16 years of age can become an official, you don't need any other SLSA awards prior
If you have any issues you can email bullisurfclub@gmail.com or contact Maria Caldwell 0407-134787
We are ALL VOLUNTEERS & every little bit of help is greatly appreciated - we thank you in advance for your assistance.

AGE MANAGERS & ASSISTANT AGE MANAGERS - Volunteers required
Covid-19 has impacted the Surf Life Saving organisation & our club will endeavour to make sure that SLSNSW recommendations along with NSW Public Health regulations are followed to make such every members health & welfare is looked after.
So today's message is all about 2020/2021 AGE MANAGERS & AGE ASSISTANTS.
Please take the time firstly to read this post & secondly one parent each family hopefully putting their hand up to assist.
Our Junior Activities Committee has just been elected but to make the season work they will come up with protocols to manage our nipper events with the current COVID restrictions & advice from SLSNSW. BUT in saying that we are going to need more qualified helpers this year than ever before seen at our club.
If you are a parent, carer or guardian & are interested in assisting with the upcoming 2020-2021 Nipper Season (COVID restrictions pending of course), either as an Age Manager, Assistant Age Manager please contact Kate Morris (Junior Secretary) or comment your interest below & we will be in touch.
On current SLSNSW advice received due to COVID-19, all helpers will need to be Age Manager qualified this year and unfortunately without enough qualified helpers, some age groups may need to be restricted. Just because you do the course doesn't mean you have to be an Age Manager...it's having qualified people waiting in the wings just in case
So here's what you need to do to help our club in the process for Age Managers qualification;
• Register & pay membership for season 2020-2021 www.bullisurfclub.com.au/registration
• Complete Working with Children Check (WWCC) http://wwwwkidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/.../working-with... Once WWCC number has been received please forward this to the club to enter into surfguard
• Go into https://members.sls.com.au
Log in using your username and password
Select the eLearning drop down menu
Select the RED Log In to eLearning tab
Select training library
Select view courses SLS - Age Managers
• Then send the Online Module completion certificate to the club
If you have any issues you can email bullisurfclub@gmail.com or contact Maria Caldwell 0407-134787
We are ALL VOLUNTEERS & every little bit of help is greatly appreciated - we thank you in advance for your assistance.

2020 Surf Life Saving Illawarra Club of the Year - BULLI SLSC
On Saturday evening (27 June 2020) Surf Life Saving Illawarra hosted the 2020 Awards of Excellence via virtual social media due to Covid-19 restrictions.
What a great night for our surf club & its members when we were announced as ILLAWARRA SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB OF THE YEAR.
To make it even more enjoyable was the fact that the club was also acknowledged as ILLAWARRA PATROLLING CLUB OF THE YEAR.
During the course of the ‘30min premiere’ our members picked up another 8 awards & 3 highly commended achievements;
Jamie Caldwell – Education Facilitator of the Year.
Brayden Woodford - Junior Athlete of the Year
Jasmine Locke - Youth Athlete of the Year
Hannah Minogue Athlete of the Year
Kevin Starling - Official of the Year
Hannah Minogue - Coach of the Year
Open Men's Boat Crew (Shane Geloven Dean Roberts Heath Mercer Ben Lowe & Fraser Worthington) - Surf Sports Team of the Year
Bulli SLSC Surf Festival Event Management - Services Team of the Year
Highly Commended to Zara Sharman (Athlete of the Year), Chelsea Jones (Youth Athlete of the Year) & Markus Meier-Lindner (Patrol Captain of the Year).
Keith Caldwell (Club President) said, “ This was a very testing season for all surf life saving clubs, weather & surf for most part wasn’t the best during summer. Assisting with the South Coast Bush Fires & numerous Emergency Call outs really tested our members commitment & drive in helping the community. Throw on top hosting in December two weekends of high quality major surf sports events including the Kellogg’s Nutri Grain Iron Series & NSW Inter Branch Championships, it really showed what this surf club is all about. Team work to the fore, friendships for life and good quality family engagement. We also had members represent Australia, New South Wales & Illawarra in surf sports, members gained lifesaving awards to patrol our beach in the red & yellow uniform, plus our nippers had the best time they could. I think it really showed the other night when our award winners came from each section within surf lifesaving, namely life- saving, education, surf sports & member services. I am so proud of how this club & its members keep raising the bar in excellence, commitment & dedication.”
Covid-19 update Surf Club premises & activities
Hi Members
Bulli Surf Life Saving Club hopes all our members continue to be healthy and safe.
As you know, our Surf Club premises has been closed to members and the public in line with NSW Government Public Health orders. From this weekend we will gradually ease those restrictions in keeping with guidelines provided by Surf Life Saving NSW and the NSW Government. It is very important that none of those guidelines are breached as the health and safety of our members is paramount, not to mention the heavy fines that are in place for any breach.
Bulli SLSC recommends that all members download the COVIDSafe App, stay at home if unwell, maintain hand and respiratory hygiene and maintain 1.5 metre physical distancing.
Function Room
A decision has been made to re-open the Club function room for fitness providers only for the time being. Hirers have their COVID-19 safety plan in place, class participation is capped at 20 persons and a physical distance of 1.5 metres between everyone is maintained. A hand sanitising station has been placed in the foyer for everyone's use on entry. No club functions are proposed for the foreseeable future due to the minimal number of persons we are permitted in the function room allowing for social distancing.
Gymnasium
The surf club gymnasium will re-open to membership from this Saturday. Contact Paul Hennessy to have your Airkey access reactivated.
Gym users need to comply with gym rules including: users must bring and use their own sweat towel; must use the provided hand sanitiser on arrival and when leaving the gym; and use the provided gym wipes to wipe down equipment before, during and after use.
It is a legal requirement that a record is kept of persons who use the surf club gymnasium. A register for that purpose will be kept inside the gymnasium. It is the responsibility of all gym users to complete that register.
Surf Sports
The majority of Surf sports training can resume. Access to gear shed for all craft training is available however no more than 10 people can enter and physical distancing of 1.5 metres between everyone must be maintained. During training, wherever possible, social distancing and hygiene protocols should be observed.
Boat training, ie. actually in boat, is still not permitted. Board rescue and beach flag training are also not allowed however indications are those restrictions will be lifted on 1 July 2020 when physical contact sport is re-introduced.
Education
Education courses can re-commence however Bulli SLSC has no courses planned in the near future.
Showers/Change Rooms
Remain closed for the immediate future.
General
Access to the club building is allowed for small meetings, maintenance etc. but with a maximum of 10 people.
Every person who enters Bulli SLSC will be required to sign in with Name and Phone number, time of arrival and time of departure.
A Bulli SLSC Covid19 safety plan is in place.
Our COVID-19 Safety Coordinator will be a shared role between the President Keith Caldwell and Director of Administration Paul Hennessy. They will act as the central point of contact for all matters COVID-19 within the Bulli Club and will liaise with each section of the club undertaking activity.
Regular cleaning of the surf club will continue including in high traffic areas, hand railings, door handles and airkey cylinders.
Disinfectant, cloths and paper towels are in easily accessible areas around the surf club building and we ask that all our members help in keeping our club clean and infection free.
We understand that the Government may continue to lift restrictions and amend guidelines and Health Orders. We will continue to interpret those and share them with our members.
Finally, and on another matter, we are just letting you know that surveillance cameras are now operating in the surf club building as a means to ensure a greater level of security. The cameras are operating continually and it is proposed to have them in place for the foreseeable future. Camera surveillance is not occurring in toilets, showers and change rooms.
Kind Regards
Paul Hennessy

Critical Boating Incident June 2020 - 2 lives saved 2 lives lost
CRITICAL INCIDENT
Saturday evening our Emergency Call Out Team were activated.
Reports of people calling for help. During the search it was alleged that at about 6.20pm Saturday 6 June 2020, a boat carrying four people capsized near Bulli Point (Peggy's Reef).
Officers from Wollongong Police District – with assistance from the Marine Area Command, PolAir, the Toll Ambulance helicopter, Marine Rescue, Surf Life Saving Illawarra Duty Officer & BULLI SLSC members – commenced a search.
About 8pm, two men aged 31 and 23, were pulled from the water by the Toll Ambulance Helicopter and taken to Wollongong hospital for treatment; they have since been released.
Due to conditions, the search was suspended at 12am (Sunday 7 June 2020), for the two other people reported missing.
The capsized boat was towed into Port Kembla Harbour early Sunday morning where Police Divers located the body of a five-year-old boy, so very sad😪
Sunday BULLI SLSC members along with members from 10 other Illawarra surf life saving clubs, SLSI Support Operations Team, SLSNSW Duty Officer, WCC Lifeguards, along with emergency service personnel from NSW Police & NSW Ambulance commenced from 6am a search of the immediate area (north & south water & land) for the 1 missing person.
Unfortunately the body of a man was recovered from the water near Corrimal about 1.10pm.
The search was then concluded.
Police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
As inquiries continue, any witnesses or anyone who saw the boat in the area yesterday is urged to come forward.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report crime via NSW Police social media pages.
30+ members from BULLI SLSC assisted over a 24hr period with the surf club as the Command Post.
So very proud of our members who performed duties in cold adverse conditions on the Saturday night & then again Sunday. From coordinating operational matters to being on the water in IRB's or RWC, to cooking the BBQ & having food & refreshments available for everybody....thank you so much 👍🙏
Surf Life Saving really stepped up in a very challenging incident, well done to everybody. If any member needs to talk, having difficulty dealing with this tragic incident please contact our Club President Keith Caldwell 0414-258295.
Our sincere condolences to the families involved in this tragedy💔😪
