NSW Age (Nippers) Championships this weekend at Umina Beach

Good Luck to everybody that will be attending the New South Wales Surf Life Saving Championships over the next three weekends. The club didn't have anyone competing in the Life Saving Championships last weekend, but we do have nippers, seniors & masters athletes making the journey to Umina/Ocean Beach on the Central Coast over the next three weeks.

Over three thousand of the state’s finest junior surf sports stars are set to descend on Ocean Beach/Umina for the first major weekend of the 2014 NSW Surf Life Saving Championships supported by ClubsNSW.

We have 23 young kids testing themselves this weekend starting today (28 February - 2 March).

Massive thanks to the parents/members that will be doing water safety, IRB duties, officials duties and respective age managers roles, you are very important to the success of this weekend.

Unfortunately the weather isn't so kind this morning with rain & overcast conditions greeting everybody as they turned up at the beach.

To everybody have fun (including parents), it is not all about winning, yes medals are unreal, but enjoying yourself, competing with your mates and reaching personal goals in individual & team events.

Well done Hannah Minogue - Nutri Grain

Well done to Hannah Minogue yesterday in the final round of the Nutri Grain Iron-Woman Series at Coolum Beach Sunshine Coast Queensland. Battling big surf and high winds she made it through the eliminator stage to contest the final where she placed 8th in the final.

Overall 9th in the series. Great effort for her 1st time in the series...bring on next year!

Thankyou to our members!

Well this last weekend was a big weekend for Bulli SLSC.....

We are sure there were a lot of tired members heading off to school and work yesterday.

Congratulations to all our members, no matter how you contributed over the weekend.

The weather wasn't kind to us & Sunday saw our members shine in testing conditions!!!

Congratulations to all our competitors.....not sure how many times you all went around the cans or ran up and down the sprint track, or rowed around the cans....one masters competitors reckons he went around the cans 24 times!! Not bad for one of our "mature" members!! Great to see a few old faces lining up in the masters events and also trying to out-gun the opens!

Results should be posted in a day or two!!

Thanks to all our officials and water safety! Most being on the beach 2 days in a row - without them the carnivals would not have run as smoothly as they did. To anyone that helped - putting up and taking down tents, organising and delivering morning tea and lunches for over 200 officials and water safety, setting up the compeition area, patrolling, first aiding, parking....the list goes on and on....a huge thank you!

The club has 18 members on the management committee and 16 turned up and worked hard whether  competing, having official duties, patrol teams, first aid officers, water safety & coached over the 2 days...OUTSTANDING PAT ON THE BACK FOR EVERYONE! Only 2 unavailable, both in Western Australia & New Zealand respectively, otherwise they would have been there as well.

It clearly shows at BULLI SLSC we do lead from the front & roll the sleeves up, even though we had heaps of volunteers over the duration of the two days.

Outstanding effort by every club member over last weekend.

George Bass Surf Boat Marathon

Good luck to our Open Men’s & Veteran Men’s crews that will be contesting the 2014 George Bass Surf Boat Marathon commencing on Sunday 29 December from Batemans Bay and concluding on Saturday 4 January at Eden. It is 7 days of rowing over approximately 190kms, a demanding race testing everybody’s physical & mental capabilities.

Our Open Men’s crew should give the race a big shake with a likely duel with Moruya Vikings who are the defending champions. The boys have been training hard for this event over the past 3 months and are ready.

Our Veteran Men’s crew have also been putting in the hard yards on the water & in the gym in preparation for the event. It should be very interesting to see who will challenge these guys on the water & also in their social activities.

Of course behind the scenes the planning & logistics of this tour has been gradually gaining momentum. Team Manager & Club President Keith Caldwell is very excited to be leading the charge with the crews & support staff.

Open Men’s Crew – Paul Jones (sweep), Dean Roberts, Heath Mercer, Ben Lowe, Dan Porra, Adam Barlow, Kyle Mercer, Damien Clark & Mitch Roberts

Veteran Men’s Crew – Shane Geloven (sweep), Rod Mercer, Chris Mercer, Craig Lunney, Glenn MacMIllan, Jason Byrne, Chad Carruthers, Kingsley Baker & Lincoln Costello

Support Staff include Carol Lowe, Anita Porra, Maria Caldwell, Barry Lowe, Mal Nelson, Garry Horne, Andy Geloven, Garry Roberts, Matt Roodenrys & Luke Sheils.

A massive thanks must also go out the following sponsors/supporters of this touring team, namely Calvin Petrol Station & Mint Car Wash, Hornby Transport, Bulli Fruit & Veg, Thirroul Bowling Leagues & Recreation Club, Bulli Pharmacy, FINZ Swimwear, Bulli Surf Life Saving Club & Ballistic Signs.

Ex Boatie wins Xmas Day Handicap Swim

53 members & friends faced the starter at our Xmas Day Handicap Swim on Wednesday 25 December @ 9.30am

Overcast grey skies & calm surf conditions, warm water temperature & a fair swim greeted the competitors. After much review of the members ranging abilities in the swimming departure handicap start times were read out with the usual whinging & moaning from the regulars.

When the whistle blew, the 'Go' starters entered the water with the final two swimmers Ben Allen & Lachlan O'Grady entering the water after '120 seconds'.

Placings were as follows;

1st Peter Long (ex boatie)

2nd Luke Sheils (current U23 boatie)

3rd Adam Barlow (current Open George Bass boatie)

1st Veteran Nathan Cattell

1st U17 Boy Connor Basham

1st U17 Girl Denver Richards

1st U14 Boy Coen Taylor

1st U14 Girl Jasmine Locke

After the swim Club President Keith Caldwell presented the winners & random members with prizes found in his assortment of items he has in his 'Äladin's Cave' of goods. By mid morning everybody had left the beach to spend Xmas Day with their loved ones.

Massive thanks to our members that patrolled on Xmas Day.....it turned out very ordinary with showers all afternoon making it very unpleasant to be at the beach, but of course there were still families that had tents set up & swam through the afternoon.

Statistics about rips

Dr Rob Brander aka Dr Rip.

Pull factor: Dr Rob Brander mapping the currents of rips at Bulli beach. Photo: Kirk Gilmour

Ocean rips kill more people in Australia on average each year than tropical cyclones, bushfires, floods and shark attacks combined.

Australia's top rip expert Rob Brander, of the University of NSW, analysed fatality figures from rips, natural disasters and shark attacks going back as far as 1852 to reveal the omnipresent danger of Australia's surf.

The study found that, on average, 21 people drown in rips around Australia each year, compared with eight killed in cyclones and six in bushfires.

When the data for 2004-11 was taken into account (the only years for which reliable rip fatality numbers are available), bushfires became the No.1 killer, claiming 27.1 lives a year. The higher bushfire death rate occurred because of the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria in 2009, which killed 173 people.

Dr Brander said the number of confirmed rip deaths was probably an underestimate of the reality, because they were only confirmed when a witness described how the victim drowned.

''Unlike a disaster where there is a mass loss of life from one incident, rip currents do not have that shock value,'' Dr Brander said.

Dr Brander spent 2 weeks last season at our beach studying the tides, beach & rip patterns.
