Hannah Minogue to star in the Nutri Grain Iron-woman Series this season
Massive congratulations to Hannah Minogue on making the Nutri Grain Iron-woman Series for 2013/2014.
6 rounds all up with the first 2 being this weekend in Western Australia, then Newcastle 14/15 December for 3 rounds with the final round being on the Sunshine Coast (Coolum) 22/23 February 2014.
She has been on fire recently at the first 3 rounds of the Sydney Water Series, leading each individual swim, ski, board, iron-person point-scores, but unfortunately won’t be available for the double points bonus last round this weekend at Thirroul due to her Nurti Grain commitments.
The club wishes Hannah all the best this weekend.

Thank you to our members
Massive thanks needs to be extended to all of our members that assisted with the running of the 2nd round of the Sydney Water Series on Saturday 9 November.
It was a great team effort with our carnival organisers, mainly the big 3 as in Sean Taylor, Stuart Brown & Scott Gordon working through logistics a couple of week's prior to the event. Special mention of Debbie Brown collecting drinks & food for the officials in 35 degree heat on the Friday.
There are too many members to name indivdually, but to those that made themselves available from 5am on the day of the carnival until 5pm when everything was packed up, well done!
From our valued members & supporters who worked the BBQ tirelessly, parking officers, assisted with carnival arena setup & pull-down, patrol duties & first aid, water safety in the morning for the nippers and then IRB & Jet Ski duty in the afternoon, our club officials that assisting in the running of the carnival, members delivering drink & food for those important officials...and many more roles that always come hand in hand when running surf carnivals.
Everybody that assisted, your role whether small or large, 10 minutes or 2 hours was greatly apreciated.
To the Illawarra clubs that also assisted with IRB's, Surf Life Saving Illawarra with jet skis made available for water safety. Thanks to Dave Greene (Surf Life Saving Illawara Surf Sports Director) & the Sydney Water Commitee for allowing the club to host this event.
A job well done!!!!

Club starts with a bang at Shellharbour & Mollymook carnivals
The 1st round of the Sydney Water Surf Premiership Series was held recently at Shellharbour and members of the senior surf/craft section recorded some solid results. With South Coast, Sydney & Sydney Northern Beaches clubs in attendance, the quality of athletes was high.
Hannah Minogue recorded 2 victories in the Open Iron-woman & Board and placed 2nd in the Open Surf & Ski. Further top 3 placings were Daniel St George who won the U17 Male Surf, Mali Taylor 1st in the U15 Female Surf, Nathan Cattell 1st in the Veterans Flags & 3rd Veterans Sprint, Emma Brown 2nd in the U17 Female Surf, Mitchell Fagerstrom 3rd in the Open Male Board.
Further strong performances by Abbey Dawson (4th U17 Female Surf), Tobias Lunney (5th U17 Male Ski & 8th in U17 Iron-man), Lachlan O'Grady (5th Open Male Surf), Jamie Brinkworth (6th Open Female Ski), Bernadette Cardillo (6th Open Female Sprint & 8th Open Female Flags), Emma Brown (7th U17 Iron-woman & 7th U17 Female Ski), Kiah Taylor (7th U17 Female Surf), Michael Harris (7th Veterans Surf) & Alexandra Smiroldo (8th Open Female Surf) completed the clubs standout performances.
Some of our boat crews travelled to the Mollymook Boat carnival last weekend and came away with some impressive results. The Open Men's A crew recorded a very impressive victory along with our World & National U19 Men's champion crew. The U23 Men's crew placed an unlucky 4th in the final after rowing second all the way & the U23 Women's crew just missed out on making the final.
Coolangatta Gold - Lunney & Fagerstrom
Good luck for 2 of our surf sports athletes who this weekend will be contesting the Coolangatta Gold on the Gold Coast.
Mitchell Fagerstrom (Open) will be contesting the long course event, a gruelling 41.5kms of ski, board, swim & running disciplines starting at Coolangatta heading north to Currumbin and returning to Coolangatta to the finish line.
Tobias Lunney (U17) will be doing his stuff in the short course U19 event totalling 33.36kms of the same disciplines.
Both have been training extremely hard for this iconic event and just to finish will be a great achievement.
Good luck to both boys in this epic event!
Russ Jones & Chris Mercer given special pride of place on new surfboat
Sunday 13 October saw our new surf boat christened at Bulli Beach.
Close to 60 members & guests were in attendance to witness the official proceedings conducted by President Keith Caldwell & Father Ken Cafe (Surf Life Saving Illawara Chaplain & Thirroul SLSC patrolling member).
Congratulations to Stu Brown from Browlec Industries who won the naming rights draw and passed up the opportunity and decided to name the boat after 2 members of the club who are rowing & sweep legends, namely Chris Mercer & Rus Jones.
Special mention of Aspirations Graphics for their outstanding sponsors design coverage on the boat.
A brief history of the two gentlemen;
Chris Mercer
When you think about Merc's record, there is no other rower who has the breadth of success he has across short course and long course. Yes, there are rowers who have won multiple open boat national titles but they haven't done the long course nor do they have the record to match in long course. Merc is the "complete" rower.
- He has competed in every George Bass that Bulli has competed in - 13. Will compete in his 14th in 2014 (if selected - ha, ah) at the age of 60.
- Various other Marathon victories including Outback Surf Boat Marathon, Sydney Harbour Marathon (2 times) and Pier One marathons
- Has been part of dominant Bulli "A" crews spanning 3 decades - 70's, 80's, & 90's.
- Australian Open boat Medallist 1976 (3rd), 1977 (2nd) and Gold in 1978 and medal winner u19's and finalist in Open Boat 1991 and 1993 (at age 39)
- NSW Open Boat 1st place 1991 and multiple State medals in Open Boat and across various divisions
- NSW State Team representative Open Boat 1989
- Australian Team Representative 1991 Trans Tasman Test against NZ
- Multiple Stints as Boat Captain
- Inducted into NSW Surf Rowers League Hall of Fame
- Life Member of Bulli Surf Life Saving Club
Russ Jones
Russ's prominence has been well documented. So much so his son Paul has seen many a commentator call him "Russ" during Paul's early sweeping career, some 15 years after Russ's retirement. Russ commenced sweeping at 18 and virtually dominated the scene for the next 33 years.
- Boat Captain – around 10years
- Accumulated 100 surf boat wins - labelled "The Don" of Surf Boats
- George Bass marathon - 1979, winner of 7 legs, the first by any crew (I think, may be Cronulla 1975, I will check with Rod)
- Won 4 medals in the Open Boat at Australian Championships including Gold in 1978. Multiple medallist and finalist across all divisions
- NSW Championships - Multiple medallist including Open Boat Gold in 1968
- NSW State Team 3 times - 1968, 1981, 1989
- To many Branch Medals and titles to count
- To many Illawarra Branch Rep teams to list accurately
- Inducted into the Australian Surf Rowers League Hall of Fame
- Life Member of Bulli Surf Life Saving Club
Our current Men's A crew under the guidance of Paul Jones (son of Russ) took the new South Coast surf boat out to test the waters.
Members of both the Jones & Mercer families were in attendance.
After the official proceedings those in attendance gathered in the club rooms for refreshments & food. A large crowd then attended Bulli Workers Club to celebrate the day's activities.
Crews claim trifecta of wins at River Run Marathon
The 25th Anniversary of the Rooster's River Run Surf Boat Marathon was held yesterday at Revesby Georges River National Park. 12 km's of madness rowing with the race finishing at St George Sailing Club Taen Point.
Always a good starting event for the season. BULLI SLSC entered three crews on the day and came away with 3 convincing wins in the Open Men, Reserve Men & U23 Women.
It was a most impressive performance with the Open guys crews using this as a guide for the George Bass Surf Boat Marathon in late December/early January down on the South Coast of New South Wales. 7 days of rowing over 196km's! The Reserve crew finished 4th in the Open Men's as well, so they beat a few of the Open Men's crews.
The U23 girls also made a good impression with 2 new girls in the crew, only joining the club this season.
Well done to the crews
Open Men - Paul Jones, Dean Roberts, Heath Mercer, Ben Lowe, Dan Porra
Reserve Grade - Lincoln Costello, Damien Clark, Kyle Mercer, Mitch Roberts, Adam Barlow
U23 Women - Shane Geloven, Allana Roscoe, Kelsey Clements, Jordan Thurling, Bonnie Frankcom

Hannah Minogue wins Wildcard spot in Nutri Grain Series
Congratulations to Hannah Minogue on gaining a Wildcard entry into the Nutri-Grain IronMan and IronWoman Series
Kellogg Australia and Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) today announced five wildcard recipients for the 2013/14 Nutri-Grain IronMan and IronWoman Series, bringing the total qualifying field to sixteen for each event.
IronMen Caine Eckstein, Hayden White and Cameron Cole along with our own Bulli IronWoman Hannah Minogue and Emma Dick, will join pre-qualified athletes and the top-four finishers from last weekend’s Salt Beach trials in the prestigious 2013/14 Nutri-Grain Series.
The wildcards were awarded after Kellogg and SLSA issued an additional two wildcards for the IronMan and IronWoman series based on the athletes’ impressive performance at the trials. The fifth wildcard was included after top ten qualifying athlete Hugh Doughtery was forced to retire due to injury.
“The policy is to award wildcards in extenuating circumstances, and after reviewing the athletes’ performance at the recent trials we made the decision to award five wildcard entries in total this year” said SLSA Surf Sports Manager Nathan Hight.
“The talent of athletes at the Trial was at an all-time high and the future of the sport looks healthy. We want to encourage, nurture and support the athletes in this sport and are looking forward to announcing a new and more robust qualifying process in the coming weeks,” said Blackhall.
Qualifying Process 2014/15
The qualifying process for the 2014/15 Nutri-Grain Series is under review by a recently appointed Athlete Advisory Panel, chaired by Contest Director Zane Holmes. Organisers are developing a program that will see a fully sanctioned Qualifying Series in place for this summer, running in conjunction with automatic pre-qualification from the Nutri-Grain Series and a Trial prior to the commencement of next season. Details will be announced in coming weeks.

Club President tours Japan as Manager of AUS LIFESAVING TEAM
Australia’s 3-Nil Whitewash over Kiwis in Surf Tests
Led by Ironman king and captain Shannon Eckstein, his fellow Northcliffe Ironwoman champion Kristyl Smith and surf-ski paddling duo Naomi Flood and Lachlan Tame, the Australian Life Saving Team completely dominated the three Test Series.
It was the first major step towards redemption for the new-look Australian team who started with a commanding 17 point win in the 1st Test, then followed it up with another 15-point win in the 2nd Test and completed the whitewash with a 16 point win in the final test.
Kristyl just a week after winning the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Trial at Salt, Kingscliff made it three from three in her specialist Ironwoman event before winning the board and playing her part in the winning board rescue (with Rachelle King) the Tube Rescue and the first two Ocean Woman and Beach Relays.
Manly’s Gold Coast-based Olympic kayaker Naomi Flood confirmed her status as the world’s finest woman surf ski paddler with another faultless display as did her fellow paddler, future Olympian and three-time National ski champion Lachlan Tame.
The pair were unbeaten throughout the three Tests in their respective single ski events, the Mixed Ski Relay and the Ocean Woman and Ocean Man Relays.
Both paddlers also played crucial roles in the Australian Beach Relays with Australia winning five of the six relays with Tame anchoring the men.
Flood (the K1 500, K2 500 and K4 500) and Tame (K1 200 and K2 200) will now continue to chased places in the Australian Olympic Team for Rio in 2016 and have declared their availability for next year’s World Championships in France.
Kurrawa’s beach flags queen Melissa Howard hardly missed a beat winning five of the six flags/beach sprint events and two of the three relays. Jake Lynch (world beach sprint & flags champion) remained undefeated during the tour.
Australia’s depth was highlighted in the final water events of the Test which saw the Open Teams (Women: Naomi Flood, Rachelle King and Miranda Bell) and (Men: Dev Lahey, Kendrick Louis and Lachlan Tame) win their Ocean Man Relays (a single man Taplin) with victories over the Australian Youth Teams who beat the other six Open teams.
And the Australians cut themselves some slack, resting Kristyl Smith and Shannon Eckstein from both these events.
National Team Head Coach Danny Short now has 12 months to mould his team to make an all out-assault on the Kiwis in a bid to wrest back the Allan Whelpton World Championship trophy at Rescue 2014.
Team Manager Keith Caldwell said, "It was a highly polished and impressive performance by all of the team over 3 gruelling days, with hot weather and testing surf conditions making it interesting racing. I think we might have surprised the Kiwi's with our hard line aproach to this event and the complete dominance came as a surprise to them. "
Members attend SLSNSW HP Camp
4 Bulli surf sports athletes Hannah Minogue, Jamie Brinkworth, Lachlan O'Grady & Mali Taylor last weekend attended the Surf Life Saving New South Wales High Performance Camp at the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre at Casuarina Beach. Unfortunately Beau Wheeler was also selected by couldn't attend due to work committments.
32 male and female athletes from 15-25yrs of age were put through rigorous physical testing to fine tune their skills preparing them for the 2013/14 surf sports season.
The athletes did strength and power drills, sprints, lower and upper body tests, endurance drills as well as video analysis as part of the three day high performance camp.
Surf Life Saving NSW Surf Sports Manager, Dan Pearce, says that the camp presents an excellent opportunity for Surf Life Saving athletes who have never used the High Performance Centre before.
“The Hurley HPC is a world class sports science and training facility that has been used by some of the world’s best sportsmen and women. SLSNSW are thrilled that we can offer such a unique experience to some of our elite athletes.
“The facility itself is a brand new multimillion dollar complex designed and funded by the AIS and Australian Sports Commission. Using a facility like the HPC will ensure that the athletes attending will learn from some of the best coaches and sports scientists in the world.
“SLSNSW hope to be able to grow our partnership with the HPC and Surfing Australia into the future with more camps similar to this,” said Dan Pearce.
