Presentation Night - great night!

Over 100 members and guests attended our 2014-2015 Awards & Presentation Night at Bulli Workers Club. With MC Keith Caldwell welcoming the crowd, a number of DVD’s produced by Ingrid Cardillo were shown highlighting our season that just passed. The crowd was also entertained by one of our very own, Nathan Flint who did a great job. Keith as President gave an overview of how the season went and then we got into the evenings awards. Dean Dudley spoke about our lifesaving & education prowess and Scott Gordon followed that up also with praise for our patrolling members and their achievements.

41 members received a high quality BULLI SLSC umbrella for obtained 100% recorded patrol attendance. Our Patrol Members of the Year were presented to the crowd, namely Lachlan O’Grady & Morgan Richards along with our Rookie Patrol Members Lauren Ah Tong & Harry Devine. Adam Smith’s Patrol Team No.6 were the toast of the patrol teams winning the ‘Owen Mercer’ Memorial Trophy for best patrol team during the season.

Ray Bromley also obtained the 60 years Long Service Award for his involvement and membership with the surf club and will be presented with this at the AGM. Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery arrived from another function and watched a DVD about our current building and what was planned for the future. He spoke about the great work our club has done over the years making our beach safer for the community and the long list of achievements by our members. Our President thanked him for the capital works funding from Wollongong City Council.

Extra entertainment on the night had our very own Jeffrey Horne (Life Member)...supposed to be presenting an award...giving the Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery a spray about the sand dunes/vegetation out the front of the surf club. ‘Fog’ as he is known gave Gordon a history lesson about Bulli beach and what he did as a young kid and how not impressed he is (and that is a view by a majority ) with the current status of the beach. For the record Gordon took the constructive criticism very well, thank god we have already received the council funding for our proposed building extensions!

Our sponsors were presented with some special items from the club as recognition of their continued support with our major sponsor Bulli Workers Club receiving a large locally produced surf print clock which looked unreal. Club sponsors that attended on the night included Darryl Lane President of Bulli Workers Club with a couple of the directors, Russell Brinkworth from Ballistics Signs, Terry Faricy President of Woonona Lions Club, Garry & Belinda Mustafa from Bulli Fruit & Deli, Simon Jones from TVH, John Boes from FINZ Swimwear, Rick Calvi from Calvi Petrol Station & Mint Car Wash & Cal from Bai Med Physiotherapy

In surf sports Mali Taylor received the ‘Ken Baker’ Surf Sports Athlete of the Year, winning medals at Branch, State & National level. Our A boat crew won the ‘Russ Jones’ Trophy as best performed crew for the season. In a special moment on the night our Australian Surf Life Saving representatives were acknowledged and presented to the crowd. Firstly Keith Caldwell as Team Manager for Rescue 2014 France and then our A Boat Crew as 2015 Trans Tasman Boat Series, with the boat crew receiving their official Australian competition cap (numbered) and framed. 6 Australian representatives in one season is an outstanding achievement for our surf club.

Getting closer to the finish of the evening’s official proceedings Stuart Brown & Simon Jones received the President’s Trophy and Barry Lowe & Dave Greene were awarded the Bulli Workers Club.  Now to our 3 major awards, Under 16 ‘Jack Horne’ Memorial Club Person of the Year went to Timothy Gordon, our Under 19 ‘Fred Dunn’ Memorial Club Person of the Year had dual winners, namely Kiah Taylor and Joshua Gordon. Our ‘John Bruton’ Memorial Club Person of the Year was awarded to Markus Meier-Lindner.

Massive congratulations to very member that received awards on the night, it was greatly deserved.

Thank you to Bulli Workers Club for supplying the venue, Opals Restaurant for the large meals, Belinda Down from Aspirations Graphics for the sponsors items (bar mats), Garry Birdsall for the Workers Club clock, WB Trophies for the trophies, Embroid Me for the club person bomber jacket & umbrellas.

Life Member Dave Fletcher RIP

It is with sadness to inform our members that Dave Arthur Fletcher aged 82, Life Member of Bulli Surf Life Saving Club passed away last Saturday morning after battling illness for some time. Dave had heart surgery some 18 months ago and battled through his later years, as relatives have said never really picked up from the surgery and wasn’t the same Dave Fletcher we all knew.

Dave obtained his Bronze Medallion in the 1951/1952 season and was a very accomplished beach competitor. Over many years Dave would keep the club’s lifesaving equipment in top working order and held the positions of Chief Instructor, Chief Gear Steward, Vice Club Captain & Deputy President.

Our condolences and thoughts are with the Fletcher family at this very sad time.

Dave’s funeral will be held this Wednesday 17 June 12 midday at Parsons Funeral Chapel 278 Princes Highway Bulli. Members to please wear some form of club attire.

Aussies Wrap!!

Bulli SLSC had 27 athletes compete at the 2015 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships at Kirra/Tugun Beaches Queensland.

Wash up from the championships saw numerous semi-finals and finals achieved by our members at the Youth, Masters & Open championships.

Tim Gordon (U15) contesting his first national surf life saving championships made the U15 Male Surf final.

Our Masters team of Michael Locke, Ian Timbrell, Peter Lord, Sebestian James, Glenn Sweeny & Greg Miller had a great time competing in fine weather and a nice wave on the 2nd bank causing a few problems for paddlers. Some standout results included our 130 Years Ski Relay of Michael Locke, Ian Timbrell & Seb James having a great paddle and in the mix for a medal finally finishing a close 5th. The 110 Years ski Relay of Glenn Sweeny, Peter Lord & Greg Milker finished 10th in a strong field. Micheal Locke & Ian Timbrell placed 5th in the 40-44 years Double Ski, plus the 110 Taplin Relay of Michael Locke, Sebestian James & Greg Miller placing 6th in a very strong field of AUS & WORLD champions. Michael Locke as he normally does produced a great paddle to finish 3rd in the 40-44 years Male Single Ski.

In the Open Championships Mali Taylor (U17) made both the Female Surf & Board finals in her age category, great effort as she is a first year U17. Emma Brown also produced a brilliant swim to place 10th in the U19 Female Surf.

In the boats our U23 Men (Barry Lowe, Albert Smeaton, Iszak Lunney, Kyle Mercer & Toby Allnutt) placed 6th in the final. Our Open Men (Shane Geloven, Dean Roberts, Heather Mercer, Ben Lowe & Dan Porra) were on fire all weekend, being the stand-out crew only to finish a close 2nd in the final...a great effort by the boys after winning State & being AUS reps.

Approximately 40-50 members & friends celebrated Aussies on the Sunday night at Kirra Beach Hotel.

Special thanks to the following people, our Team Managers (Scott Gordon - Keith Caldwell - Stu Brown), Competition Secretary (Maria Caldwell), Boat/Gear Trailer Drivers (Shane Geloven, Lincoln Costello & Sean Taylor), Officials (Peter Hammersley, Michael Hammersley, Garry Roberts & Dave Greene), Powercraft Duties (Scott Gordon, Jason Norris & Mitchedll Bath - both from Windang SLSC).

Kids swim well at National Open Water Championships in WA

Big congratulations to four of our members that competed last weekend at the Australian Open Water Championships at Bathers Beach Western Australia.

Alexandra Smiroldo (17-18 years), Natasha Burke (14 years) and Sheree Farrell (15 years) all came 6th in their respective ages in the 10km race. Daniel St George (17-18 years) placed 9th in his 10km race.

All four also did the 5km races with Sheree coming away with a medal winning performance gaining 2nd, Alex & Daniel both came 5th and Natasha 20th in their respective ages.

3 of the group, namely Alex, Sheree & Daniel now head off to a Surf Life Saving Australia Open Water Camp this weekend which they gained selection in. Unfortunately Natasha is too young at this stage to be considered for this camp...hopefully looking towards the future for her.

A weekend on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland with coaching, skills sessions and much more. Hoping the weather is ok with the cyclone developing off the Queensland coast.

Bulli Boaties smash Kiwis 3-0

Our Bulli Open Men's crew on Saturday 7 February 2015 representing AUSTRALIA. They smashed the Kiwis 3-0 in the Trans Tasman Boat Series and then proceeded to win the final of the Northern Island Boat Championships on the same day.

Here is a story below from Jamie Troughton Dscribe Media Services from NZ;

Proudly watched by his father and decked out in green and gold, Heath Mercer enjoyed the finest day of his fledgling sporting career yesterday.

The 23-year-old second stroke helped his Bulli men's boat crew - representing Australia - to an emphatic win in the trans-Tasman series at Waihi Beach, New Zealand, beating Kiwi crew Piha 3-0. Making it even more special was the presence of Mercer's dad Rod, who also rowed for his country in 1991, the year Heath was born. "It's been one massive goal in life and I've ticked that off," a jubilant Mercer Jnr explained. "I've made him a very proud dad and this morning, he was privileged enough to present all our caps to us. That was a really touching moment and one I'll always remember. I couldn't wish for anything more than my dad to be here watching me row for Australia."

The Mercer family have a long and storied association with the New South Wales club - Rod's father, brothers and nephews have also rowed for Bulli over the years. Together with Adam Barlow (bow), Ben Lowe (second bow), Dean Roberts (stroke) and sweep Shane Geloven, Mercer and his crew had the polish to see off the challenge of renowned big-wave chargers Piha, with only a small half-metre wave to challenge teams.

Instead, it came down to teamwork and acceleration off the cans, with Geloven steering cunning lines all the way home in each of the three races, eking out every hint of swell. Their closest race was in the decisive second test, where Barlow out-sprinted Piha's Jean-Paul Smit up the beach after Smit tripped in a hole. "Luckily Adam's the quickest of all of us across the sand - it would've been even closer if the New Zealand guy hadn't tripped running up the beach but I had high hopes for Adam holding him off regardless," Mercer said. "We came into this event feeling a lot of pressure and to get the first two races under our belt really eased it a lot and meant we could enjoy ourselves a lot more."

To add further misery to locals, the Bulli Boys won the final at the North Island championship, held in conjunction with the trans-Tasman event.

AUSTRALIAN REPS - Open Men's boat crew

Good Luck to the Bulli Open Men’s boat crew who recently were selected to represent AUSTRALIA in the Trans Tasman Test Match Series which is to be held on Saturday the 7th of February 2015 at Waihi Beach, North Island, New Zealand in conjunction with the North Island Surf Boat Championships.

The guys fly out today (Thursday 5 February) from Sydney after a function at SLSA HQ to mark their selection.

The crew is made up of Shane Geloven (sweep), Dean Roberts, Heath Mercer, Ben Lowe & Adam Barlow. Dan Porra, the usual bowman for the crew went on holidays over Xmas & the New Year period when the selection carnival was on, so Adam stepped in and the rest is history.

Speaking of history these guys now bring the total to 22 Bulli members that have proudly represented AUSTRALIA in lifesaving, education & surf sports teams over our 102 years of history.

Club President Keith Caldwell said, “These blokes have raced consistently over the past few seasons and to see their excitement when they were named was priceless. The hours these guys put in the gym, on the road & in the boat is unbelievable. But also all are patrolling members of the club and help out with fundraising as well. They deserved this and it is great for our club, the past 12 seasons we have had members represent AUSTRALIA, which is an outstanding achievement.”
