Congratulations to Bulli Men's A boat crew consisting of Shane Geloven (sweep) Ben Lowe Heath Mercer Dean Roberts Adam Barlow (filling in for Dan Porra) who contested the SLSA selection trials yesterday at Elourea.

Strong racing against the best crews in Australia resulting in the crew being selected as the Australia Life Saving representative open men's crew for the Trans Tasman Test Series in New Zealand in February 2015.

To say the boys are excited is an under-statement!

This is the 2nd Bulli crew in it's history that has been selected to represent Australia in a Trans Tasman Series, the 1st one being back in 1991 Robbie Meijer, Mark Davies, Peter McLaren, Rod Mercer & Chris Mercer.

Rod (father) & Heath (son) now representing Australia 24 years apart, how good is that.

Bulli Boys win 1st Round of Ocean Thunder

Event # 1 - Wrap up & Results from Saturday 16th November 2014

CALVI SERVICE STATION & MINT CAR WASH ROW PERFECTLY TO WIN 1ST ROUND

A record, twenty five Men’s and fifteen Women’s elite level surf rowing crews today lined up on Sydney’s Dee Why beach to battle out event one of this seasons Beko Home Appliance Ocean Thunder Surfboat Series.

The Mens preliminary rounds were dominated by Calvi Service Station & Mint Car Wash - Bulli and Bretts Hardware - Currumbin who both finished the mornings Six races with five wins apiece. Bridge Legal - Palm Beach and Dial Before You Dig -Bondi put in eye catching displays finishing the mornings rounds in third and
Fourth positions respectively on the table.

Hard racing was the order of the day with results varying as crews battled small one metre waves but very difficult rowing conditions created by a strong cross wind.

The Mens qualifiers for the afternoon’s finals included Calvi Service Station & Mint Car Wash - Bulli, Bretts Hardware - Currumbin, Bridge Legal - Palm Beach, Dial Before You Dig - Bondi, The Beach Club, Collaroy XXXX Gold - Collaroy, Dial Before You Dig - Mona Vale, Dial Before You Dig - Austinmer, 7 News - Cronulla, Carpet Court - Rosebud, Dial Before You Dig - Bulli, Bullock - Bilgola, Rocks Brewing - Mona Vale, Sheldon Office Fitouts - Newport, Quick Towing Services - Collaroy and Palm Beach SLSC - Palm Beach.

Surprise eliminations included the highly fancied Design Bathware - Corrimal, Bilgola SLSC - Bilgola, Blue Sky Alternative Investments - Bronte and TJS Services -Currumbin.

A series of gruelling elimination, quarter and semi-finals saw the Men’s field whittled down to a final of six that lined up as The Collaroy - South Curl Curl, Bridge Legal -Palm Beach, Bretts Hardware - Currumbin, Calvi Service Station & Mint Car Wash - Bulli, The Beach Club, Collaroy XXX Gold- Collaroy and Dial Before You Dig -Mona Vale.

In the final, Calvi Service Station & Mint Car Wash - Bulli got off to an incredible start and never looked back, Bretts Hardware - Currumbin and The Beach Club, Collaroy XXX Gold - Collaroy looked the only crews with a chance of mowing down the front runners coming into the all-important second leg of the gruelling double race final but never really troubled Calvi Service Station & Mint Car Wash - Bulli who came away with the first rounds honours in a two length win to an enormous roar from the crowd.

The final finished with Calvi Service Station & Mint Car Wash - Bulli in first , Bretts Hardware - Currumbin in second and The Beach Club, Collaroy XXX Gold – Collaroy in third place.

Ocean Thunder Boat Series - 2 crews from the club racing

This Saturday (15 November) sees the 1st round of the Ocean Thunder Pro Surf Boat Series at Dee Why.

Our Men's A crew (current NSW Champions) & U23 Men's crew (curent U19 Australian Champions) will both be competing in the series this season.

The A crew are the same four blokes rowing again this season (Dan Porra, Heath Mercer, Ben Lowe Dean Roberts) with last season's U19 sweep Shane Gelovan taking the reins.

The U23 guys are the same four also from last season (Iszak Lunney, Albert Smeaton, Toby Allnutt, Kyle Mercer) with Bary Lowe sweeping them.

Massive thanks to sponsors Calvi Petrol Station and Mint Car Wash (North Ryde) who will be looking after our open crew and Dial before you Dig who are sponsoring our U23 crew.

Thanks to Bateman's Bay SLSC for supporting our U23 guys and handing over their spot after they were unable to make a committment to the series. It is going to be a great experience for the young guys.

We believe history may have been created in the Illawarra surf life saving community with 3 siblings from the one family in the same representative team!

A couple of other athletes must have been a bit unlucky not to make the team after producing some solid results at the first two Sydney Water Premiership Series carnivals.

All roads lead to France for 2 Bulli members

All roads lead to France for two Bulli Surf Life Saving Club members. The World Life Saving Championships known as Rescue 2014 are being held in Montpellier France later this month.

Club President Keith Caldwell will represent Australia as Team Manager of the Open Life Saving Team that will contest the international teams championship at Rescue 2014. Keith has over the years has managed 7 Australian Teams and travelled to locations such as South Africa, New Zealand & Japan. The Australian team is out for revenge after New Zealand won the title at Rescue 2012. New Zealand had a number of Olympic athletes and proved too strong overall in 2012. New Zealand have again picked a strong team but Australia have returned serve with a team lead by World Iron-man Champion Shannon Eckstein and Olympians Naomi Flood and Ryan Napoleon. Caldwell said, “It will be a great contest to wrestle the crown from New Zealand, our team recently had a camp on the Gold Coast and are primed for a strong performance.”

Bernadette Cardillo will be the sole athlete for Bulli at this world’s and is hoping to perform strongly in the Open Female beach events. Bernadette is a former NSW U17 Beach Sprint Champion, NSW representative & she also placed in the U19 at state level. Bernadette has been training strongly and is looking towards a finals berth in the sprint. Bulli over the years has won 32 medals at the World Championships including 15 gold medals.

The international competition runs from 17 September to 21 September and the inter-club competition runs from 24 September to 28 September.

Bulli kids shine in NZ

NSW Pool Rescue Team Triumphant In NZ

Twelve athletes from the NSW U18 development team that travelled to New Zealand have returned this week with an incredible 19 medal haul at the NZ Pool Rescue Championships in Auckland.

At what was a very competitive event that saw a number of New Zealand national records tumble, the NSW athletes came away with extremely strong results showing how far Pool Rescue development has come in the state.

Against some of the strongest pool competitors in the world, the 12 young NSW athletes came away with six gold, nine silver and four bronze medals while NSW Team Coach, Rachelle King, also won a bronze medal.

The results meant that every one of the 12 athletes as well as one of the team coach came away with medals.

Some of the standouts included Cory Fletcher (Terrigal) who won five medals including two gold in the 50m swim and 4x50m relay, two silver and a bronze.

Indigo Verhoeven (Umina) won three medals including gold in the 4x25m manikin relay and the 100m manikin carry with fins as well as a silver medal in the 4x50m obstacle relay.

Emily Rosskelly (Warilla Barrack Point), Abbey Dawson (Bulli) and Kendal Fitzgibbons (Terrigal) each won four medals while Kiah Taylor (Bulli), Daniel St George (Bulli) and Abigail Pugh (North Cronulla) won three medals apiece.

Surf Life Saving NSW Team Manager, Don Van Keimpema, says the team’s outstanding results shows how strong the standard of Pool Rescue is in NSW.

“This has been a fantastic tour for these young athletes. Not only did they gain a valuable touring experience they have achieved some incredible results and shown some real potential emphasising their bright futures in Pool Rescue.

“This tour has really shown how strong Pool Rescue has been developing in NSW from the State Championships right down to our Pool Rescue clinics. I’d also like to extend our thanks to Surf Life Saving NZ for our enabling our athletes to participate and compete in their National Championships,” said Mr Van Keimpema.
