Terrigal SLSC has once again dominated the NSW Pool Rescue Championships over the weekend at Peninsula Leisure Centre, Woy Woy.
More than 350 competitors from 23 clubs battled it out in the pool competing in events such as obstacle swims, manikin carries, line throws and medley relays.
Bulli with a very young & small squad of 15 athletes + 2 oldies came away with a swag of medals and placed 4th overall in the club pointscore behind Terrigal, Umina & Cronulla Surf Life Saving Clubs. Our athletes won 3 gold 10 silver & 5 bronze medals.
Well done to all the team on a great weekend, especially two new U12 girls Zara Sharman & Kiamana Fittock who only recently joined the club from Woonona & Coledale respectively. Both girls came away with a few medals on their first attempt at pool rescue events. We also have a new group of U12-U14-U15-U17 girls who are all stillwater swimmers and showed that with further skills training they will be a force to be reckoned with, they also picked up State medals at their first attempt.
Many thanks to Sean Taylor & Keith Caldwell who conducted training sessions at Wollongong University Aquactic Centre. Special mention to Leanne Taylor who was an official over the weekend and Scott Gordon who performed pool setting duties on both days.

Sportsman's Luncheon - Shannon Eckstein headline speaker
Bulli Surf Life Saving Club is one of the leading clubs in the Illawarra/South Coast region. This Friday 30 May the club will be holding a Sportsman’s Luncheon at Bulli Workers Club to help raise much needed dollars to go towards proposed extensions to their out of dated surf club. The surf club was built by its members in the 1960’s and has survived the test in harsh conditions for over 50 years, but now is the time to do some renovations and extensions.
Because of the success of the club in all areas including lifesaving, education, surf sports and member development their membership base has continued to rise hitting 680 this past season, an increase from 2008 of a staggering 82%.
The Sportsman’s Luncheon has attracted a star studded line-up with Kurt Hanson (Hanson Media Group), a Freshwater surf club member as MC. Current World & Australian Iron-Man champion Shannon Eckstein will head line the guest list with the Illawarra Cutters Rugby League Coach Ian ‘Basil’ Millward to share his thoughts about rugby league, a surprise guest from the Special Air Forces (SAS) Regiment from Western Australia will also be in attendance and to add his touch of humour on the day will be the one and only ‘Dasher’.
Tickets are $100 which includes 2 course meal 4 hour drink package and entertainment. Activities start at 1pm and conclude at 5pm with Live Auction Sporting memorabilia items going under the hammer, large raffle and silent auction items to help raise funds.
Club President Keith Caldwell said, “This is one of our big fundraisers that happens every two years. It is always an enjoyable day and I would sincerely like to thank our sponsors, supporters and club members who have donated items for the day.”
No tickets sold on the day. Please contact Keith Caldwell 0414-258295 for further details.
Rescue 2014 Australian Teams announced - Keith Caldwell Team Manager
Congratulations to our Club President Keith Caldwell who has been announced as Team Manager of the Australian Open Life Saving Team to contest the World Life Saving Championships in France.
Olympians will bolster the Australian Life Saving Team, with Surf Life Saving Australia and Royal Life Saving Society – Australia having announced the 24 names of the 2014 Australian Life Saving Team to contest this year’s World Life Saving Championships, Rescue 2014, in France in September.
London Olympian kayaker Naomi Flood, a member of the successful Australian World Championship campaigns of 2008 and 2010, returns to the women’s team while, Olympian and champion swimmer Ryan Napoleon makes his debut in the men’s team.
General Manager, Capacity and Capability, Surf Life Saving Australia, Kitty Chiller said that these athletes are Australia’s best of the best, and will compete against more than 40 countries including New Zealand, France, Japan, USA, UK, Wales, Canada and Italy in the city of Montpellier on the Mediterranean Sea.
“The New Zealand Life Saving Team is the current World Champions however Australia has shown that they are a force to be reckoned with having won the 2013 International Surf Rescue Challenge and the 2013 German Cup,” Miss Chiller said.
“These athletes should feel incredibly proud to be representing their country. Rescue 2014 will test the skills of the best in the world in water safety and rescue management, both in the pool and on the beach,” she said.
“Surf Life Saving Australia and the Royal Life Saving Society – Australia have worked together to build the Australian Life Saving Team, and we support them on their journey to competing for Australia at the world titles,” Miss Chiller said.
Australian Life Saving Team Head Coach Danny Short said he is excited with the team which he believes can take on the Kiwis.
Flood and Napoleon, a member of RLSS Queensland, will be joined by newcomers - world beach sprint and beach flags champion Jake Lynch (Newport) and four-time Australian single ski champion and prospective Rio kayak Olympian Lachlan Tame (Avoca).
“The inclusion of Flood and Lachlan Tame gives the team a huge boost - they bring not only their brilliance in the water and on the beach but also a level of enthusiasm which will be a positive influence on the whole team,” Mr Short said.
“Having them both in Japan last year was a huge plus with Flood again leading by example in competition and around the team - it is great to have her back in the team after her London Olympic campaign and her amazing performances on the ski for Manly at this year’s Aussies,” he said.
“Northcliffe and RLSS Queensland’s Napoleon, who swam the 400m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle in London, will be a welcome addition, particularly in the pool lifesaving events where Australia struggled to match it with World Champions New Zealand and Pool Lifesaving champions Italy at Rescue 2012 in Adelaide,” he said.

Aussies is over again for another year.
Over 5,000 surf life savers plus families converged on Scarborough Beach Western Australia last week for the 2014 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.
Congratulations to all of our athletes that ventured west, 38 in total plus a loyal band of parents & supporters also made their way west.
Our athletes made 21 finals which is a great effort.
Massive congratulations to our Australian medal winners;
Australian Champions U19 Men's Boat crew of Shane Geloven, Albert Smeaton, Iszak Lunney, Kyle Mercer & Toby Allnutt who have gone back to back winning gold again this year....outstanding effort.
And what about Michael Locke & Hannah Minogue who lead the whole way in the Open Mixed Double Ski only to be run down right on the finish line to place 2nd. Micheal winning his first Open Australian medal, he has won heaps of State. Australian & World Masters medals, but this is his first Open medal at 44 years of age....great team effort.
Hannah Minogue then picked up her second medal with a strong 3rd placing in the Open Female Single Ski behind two Olympians.
Aussies - Good Luck
All flights lead to Western Australia this week for the 2014 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships to be held at Scarborough Beach starting yesterday with Masters events.
The Aussies, organised by Surf Life Saving Australia, is the largest event of its kind in the world - in the same magnitude as the Commonwealth Games.
Over the seven days, 5,000 competitors will chase prized Aussies medals on the beach and in the ocean with craft, boats, swimming, rescue and lifesaving events that hone the skills and ability of our surf lifesavers to protect the community, and ensure they are rescue ready.
Visit the event website at www.sls.com.au/aussies
Look for live results throughout the event here.

Or check out our surf club face-book page on our website
Leading our charge first up today will be Nathan Cattell in the Masters 35-39yrs 2km beach run, he has been training hard for this event and after a close 4th at State he is really pumped for a good result.
After that competition will start on Wednesday with majority of finals on this Sunday 6 April for all of our Open competitors, we have 5 boat crews, 12 surf/craft & 1 beach athlete gunning for glory.
Loking for some strong results in the boat section, with the Open Men's crew out to prove that winning the NSW Title was no fluke, they have been on fire lately, but this will be a massive test against the best in Australia. The U19 Men's crew will be out to rectify their disappointing error in the semi final at State when the gate-cans became a problem, causing them to miss a place in the final.
In the surf/craft section expect some strong performances from Hannah Minogue in the Open Female events, especially the ski after her 2nd placing at State behind Naomi Flood. She is also expected to do well in the iron-woman & board events. Bernadette Cardillo made the final of the Open Female Sprint at State and her training has been going well, so here's hoping for a spot in the final. Both Beau Wheeler & Mitchell Fagerstrom are up against the big boys in the Open Men's section, but have been performing strongly all year, so watch out for some strong performances from both of them. Michael Locke our Veteran ski paddler is only doing the Open Male Ski & Mixed Double Ski with Hannah Minogue and they are happy with where they are at, on the winning wave at State only to place 4th out of the 4 teams on the wave.
We also have a group of U19, U17 & U15 boys & girls who have trained hard all year and can't wait to see if that training will get them a semi-final, a final or even a poduim finish. Look out for Lachlan O'Grady, Daniel St George & Mali Taylor in the swim events, plus Josh Bond & Lachlan O'Grady in the U19 Double Ski. Tobias Lunney, Kiah Taylor, Emma Brown & Bryar Lunney are all hoping for some Saturday or Sunday action as well in finals.

MASSIVE THANKS
Our athletes are in debt to our many officials who worked so hard over the 3 weekends, members that completed water safety duty at the age championships, plus our power craft personnel over the age & open championships. Not forgetting our trailer drivers, tent setup members and team managers & area managers. Well done to all it is greatly appreciated.
State Championships this weekend
Good luck to all of our surf sports athletes this weekend at the 2014 NSW Open Surf Life Saving Championships at Umina/Ocean Beach.
Hope the weather & surf is kind to everybody.
Looking forward to some great results from our Boat Section with the Men's A & U19 Men's crews leading the way, both are flying at the moment and come into the championships in great form. Good performances are also expected from our U23 Men plus Open & U23 Women's crews. Unfortunately our 220yrs Masters Men's crew had to withdraw due to an injury.
Look out for Hannah Minogue leading the charge for the surf/craft competitors over the 3 days with strong medal chances expected in all disciplines for her. Beau Wheeler & Mitchell Fagerstrom will lead the way in the Open guys with a strong band of U19 & U17 guys looking for some strong performances (Lachlan O'Grady, Joshua Bond, Calvin Richards, Tobias Lunney, Brad Nees, Daniel St George). Our U17 girls & U15 girls could be the dark horses over the weekend with a bit of luck. Kiah Taylor, Emma Brown, Abbey Dawson, Mali Taylor, Bryar Lunney & Denver Richards will be flying the flag for the club.
We have two beach athlete's this weekend with Bernadette Cardillo (Open Female) and one of our Masters guys Nathan Cattell having a run in the 2km beach run in readiness for next week's masters events.
