Season 2015-2016 comes to an end - Patrol Flags down!

With the flags now down we can look back onto another season with NO LIVES LOST on Bulli beach – a great achievement and a big thank you to all patrol teams as well as volunteers and congratulations for a job well done. 103 years of history in the making with no lives lost in this period of time whilst our members have been on patrol...outstanding.

A bit of an update on 20 March the patrol was audited for the last time as part of the seasonal auditing program run by SLSI and Wollongong City Council Lifeguard Service. Patrol Team 3 under the captainship of Mick Harris got another full score of 100%, which completes the audits for the season – all with top scores.

Very busy Easter and ANZAC Day long weekends saw all patrol teams and extra volunteers on duty conducting large numbers of preventative actions to keep beach goers safe from sometimes very dangerous surf conditions, often towards the southern half of the beach adjacent to the caravan park and near Woonona pool.

To put the last season into numbers – on Bulli Beach we had a total of

  • ·         135 members patrolling and providing water safety
  • ·         4,130 volunteer hours of patrols and water safety
  • ·         37 rescues
  • ·         41 first aid provisions
  • ·         673 preventative actions
  • ·         1 lost and then found child
  • ·         23 incident reports completed

Massive thank you to all of our lifesaving team led by Club Captain Scott Gordon, Vice Club Captains Dave Greene & Nathan Flint along with our IRB/ATV Captain Markus Meier-Lindner on a job well done.

Our Patrol Captains play a big role in making sire that the beach is safe and members are doing the right thing...well done guys & girls.

Big thank you to Bulli Beach Cafe who supplied lunch vouchers at the start & end of season full day patrols.

Members of Patrol Team 4 win SLSNSW & SLSA Rescue of the Month

Bulli Surf Lifesavers Win National And State Award

The courageous efforts by a patrol team from Bulli SLSC to rescue six swimmers who had been dragged 100 metres out to sea last month have seen the club win the National and NSW Rescue of the Month.

On Sunday 6 December at around 1:30pm, a large wave barrelled through the middle of the red and yellow flags and dispersed a large group of swimmers, pushing six males north into a rip. On this day there were multiple strong currents and a 2-3 metre swell that was causing havoc for swimmers and lifesavers at Bulli Beach.

“It was a busy day and at that time there were around 100 swimmers between the flags and we had fairly strong rips either side,” patrol member Dean Dudley said.

Lifesaver Kiah Taylor noticed the large wave sweep through and drag the swimmers out into deeper water, and it soon became apparent that they were in some difficulty. Dean Dudley was nearby and ran to the northern flag, grabbed a rescue tube and entered the water with Kiah following on a rescue board.

“All of this happened so quickly, the patrol saw me enter the water and they all followed. The teamwork shown by the patrol was amazing, we had three boards in the water - two were rescue boards and Morgan had my personal board,” Mr Dudley said.

Not too far behind and also on rescue boards were Morgan Richards and Kaimana Fittock who had paddled out to help the swimmers. Kiah attempted to rescue the most distressed swimmer but was hampered by the man resisting her efforts in his panic to stay afloat.

Dean swam over and swapped rescue equipment with Kiah but he too faced difficulties calming the swimmer before eventually managing to get him to shore with the assistance of Stuart Brown.

Kaimana had her board overturned as she was trying to retrieve three of the struggling swimmers, but fortunately she was assisted by Zara Sharman who swam out to assist. Kaimana and Zara worked together to return three males to shore. Graham Bilton entered the water without any equipment and headed towards the remaining two swimmers in distress.

“It was a matter of necessity that Zara and Graham entered the water without any equipment. In Graham’s case, he didn’t have access to any equipment so what he did was particularly important and Zara acted on her instincts and provided invaluable assistance,” Dean Dudley said.

Morgan Richards had retrieved one of the remaining swimmers on her board and directed Graham to the final swimmer while Kiah followed. Graham arrived first and calmed the swimmer down so that Kiah could secure a rescue tube to the man and bring him to shore through the large swell.

Meanwhile, Dean was continuing to return his swimmer to shore when a 2 metre wave broke on them pushing the male down the wave, where he was within reach of Stuart Brown. Daniel St George arrived on scene in the IRB and did a sweep of the area to ensure there were no swimmers still struggling and remained in the water until all six swimmers were safely on shore.

“This was an old-school, old-fashioned rescue and we did whatever we could to bring the six swimmers to shore. In hindsight I would’ve launched the IRB sooner but it all happened so quickly and the first instinct was to get out there and keep the swimmers above water and wait for help to arrive, which it did,” Dean Dudley added.

The SLSNSW Rescue of the Month aims to recognise excellence in lifesaving. Each month a ‘Rescue of the Month’ is awarded at State level for the most outstanding rescue performance for that period. Monthly winners have the chance to win the Australian Rescue of the Month and become finalists for the SLSNSW Rescue of the Year which is presented at the annual Awards of Excellence.

Congratulations and well done to members Stuart Brown, Dean Dudley, Graham Bilton, Daniel St George, Kiah Taylor, Morgan Richards, Kaimana Fittock & Zara Sharman

Shannon Eckstein Clinic - a success!

What a great day at the Shannon Eckstein Clinic held yesterday (Monday 18 January) at Bulli Beach.

Warm sunny conditions and close to 70 kids in age from U10 to U17 got the chance to meet Shannon Eckstein up close & personal. Shannon, who only the day before won his 9th Nutri Grain Iron-Man Series at North Cronulla and leading Queensland Coach Dan Norton-Smith, plus Head Club Coach Scott Jones & club member Jamie Caldwell took the kids through 4 work stations including wading, boady surfing, board paddling technique (they got to wacth themselves on video), board skills and then had a few fun races to finish of the day.

Bulli President Keith Caldwell, “ What a fantastic day with clear blue skies, warm surf conditions and a little wave for all the kids to challenge themselves under the guidance of Shannon & Dan. We had close to 70 kids from as far as Mollymook in the south to North Narrabeen in the north. These kids had the chance to train & play with arguably the best ever iron-man surf life saving has ever seen. They had a blast. I can’t thank Shannon & Dan enough for their efforts, also to everybody that assisted with water safety and the logistics of the whole day. Something that these kids will never forget.”

Major thank you to our club sponsors who assisted on the day;

Bulli Fruit & Deli, FINZ Swimwear, Bulli Beach Cafe, EnVie Fitness & Bulli Woolworths....you guys are unreal.

To all of our club members that assisted with water safety (and parents from other clubs) and preparing morning tea & lunches, tent set up & pack up...too many to name personally, but your help is always appreciated.

Open Men's crew win the George Bass Surf Boat Marathon

The 2016 George Bass Surf Boat Marathon had everything....testing large surf conditions, strong southerly winds, torrential rain, sunshine (few days) & a north easterly wind (2hrs after the event finished).

The club has a proud history in this iconic event and 2016 didn't disappoint with our Open Men's crew known as the 'Nipper Vets' winning 4 legs of the gruelling 7 day 190km event. Battling the elements including changing course conditions each day, a couple of days rowing in flat water including Moruya River proved not only a physical challenge but a mental challenge as well. And our boys showed exceptional class to withstand the strong challenges from Moruya Vikings, Coogee & Long Reef crews over the 7 days.

Well done to Paul Jones (sweep), Adam Barlow, Adam Hammersley, Darren Thompson, Chad Peterson, Josh Woodword, Greg Pilkington, Aron Davis & Wayde Peterson.

Our 'Óld Vets' as they were known battled the elements each day, still enjoying the challenge even if the arms & legs are getting weary. The social side of this crew still stands out & the stories at camp each night made the trip memorable.

Well done & congratulations to Nigel Taylor (sweep), Craig Lunney, Chad Carruthers, Rod Mercer, Chris Mercer, Peter McLaren, Jason Sparkes, Jason Byrne & Glenn MacMillan.

Team Bulli/Camp Bulli was led by Adam Barlow (Boat Captain), Lincoln Costello & Chrstine Churchill. Assisted by a heap of mums and support crew who over the 7 days of rowing made sure that the camp site was right, meals ready including after race snacks, trailers transported to the right locations, support boats ready for each day and so on.....so a shout out to the following;

* The Bulli support crew; all the wives and supporters that pitched in to help run the camps, make the lunches, tow trailers as required, cared for the kids (even ones that didn't belong to them) etc.

* The support boat owners, Mitchell Roberts, Kieran Harris from Pambula SLSC, support boat drivers, there were a few over the week, Graham Davis, Matt Roodenrys, Jim and Mark from Pambula SLSC and the crewmen Snow Roberts and Braidan Byrne.

* The "Bulli cheer squad", the kids. It was reported that the rowers could hear them every day cheering from headlands, bridges and wharfs along the coast. This got them all to the finish.

* Those that towed the boats (surf boats and power boats)

* The rowers themselves, not only did they row every day, but they cooked, washed up and maintained camp.

The start of the week had its challenges, with the rain and a trashed camp but thanks goes out to all for adapting to the conditions as well as you did and everybody was amazed how well behaved all the kids were, especially in the horrendous weather at Moruya; a credit to you all.

Our sponsors that supported this event including Bulli Pharmacy (medical supplies), FINZ Swimwear (yellow rowing shirts & caps, water bottles), Bulli Fruit & Deli (suplies of fresh fruit & salad), Thiroul Bowling Leagues & Recreational Club (grey t/shirts), Envie Fitness (bottled water for support boat & rowers).

Without all of the above the successful week that was, couldn't have happened.

A true club effort, well done to all.

Please see attached flyer & registration form for the 2016 Shannon Eckstein Clinic for U10-U17 water kids.

Surf Life Saving NSW Life Member - Keith Caldwell

It is a great pleasure to announce that Keith Caldwell our President was last week announced as a Life Member of Surf Life Saving New South Wales at the 2015 SLSNSW AGM.

For almost four decades, the name Keith Caldwell has been synonymous with the Bulli Surf Life Saving Club, and now his efforts at a club, branch, state, and national level have been recognised with his elevation to Life Member of Surf Life Saving NSW.

Keith’s journey began in 1976 when he joined the club as a cadet lifesaver. A multi-talented surf sport’s competitor, Keith earned medals at a branch, state and national level in a variety of disciplines both on the beach and in the water.

With his competition days over and his passion for surf sports still burning, he turned to coaching and team mangement to stay in the game. A man generous with his time, there are hundreds of lifesavers around Australia who have benefited from his guidance and experience over the years.

Keith has been involved with Illawarra Branch, NSW and Australian representative teams and was Australian Open Team Manager at the 2012 and 2014 World Lifesaving Championships.

Aside from his involvement in surf sports, his dedication to his club is something to be admired and he has juggled many administrative roles over the years, always ready to help out and serve his beloved club in whatever way he can.

After a two-year stint as Deputy President, Keith took over the reigns as club President in 2005, a position he still holds. It’s fair to say that the last decade has been very successful for Bulli SLSC with the club achieving wide spread acclaim for their best practice administration.

Some of the accolades achieved by the club under Keith’s stewardship include Illawarra Champion Surf Sports Club (2006-14), Club of the Year (2005, 2007, 2010, 2011 & 2015), and a finalist for the SLSNSW Club of the Year in 2007.

Keith is a Life Member of Bulli Surf Life Saving Club & Surf Life Saving Illawarra.

For his dedication to the Surf Life Saving movement at a club, branch, state and national level over many years, Keith Caldwell is a deserving recipient of SLSNSW Life Membership.

Construction Certificate Plans approved for extensions

Exciting news with Wollongong City Council today finally approving our Construction Certificate Plans for our proposed two storey extension on the southern side of the surf club.

Lower level for storage of club & council lifesaving equipment and the upper level having disabled access (lift), secretary's office, kitchen, tiolets and a club room (100 seating) for our activities including education courses, club events & functions.

Now the next stage of the development is the tender process for prospective company's to be the preferred licenced builder decided by council. This normally takes a couple of months, so we believe the actual project more than likely to start April/May 2016.

Club President Keith Caldwell said, " Received the phone call from Wollongong Council today letting us know that the plans have finally been approved. This is the best feeling as now it becomes a reality for all our members to actual see the vision that we have been waiting for over 5 years of hard work by our Executive & Building Committee meeting all the necassary regulations, plans, specialists reports required by council to get to this stage. There is still a lot of work to go but now our confidence is sky high, we can't wait to see the finished produce."

Bulli's newest Life Member Paul Jones

At the recent Annual General Meeting Paul Jones was granted Life Membership of our club.

He was a very proud man standing there receiving his Life Members badge from Club President Keith Caldwell. His dad Russell (Life Member) was present at the meeting and indeed it was a very proud day for the Jones family. Paul gave a very humble speech on what it meant to him in being a member of the surf club.

Paul joined Bulli SLSC as a nipper in the 1979/80 Season and stepped up into the senior section of the club as a cadet in 1983/84 gaining his Life Saving Certificate and the following year obtaining his Bronze Medallion.

Paul has been a member of Bulli for 35 years and has held Executive, Management & Office holder positions within the club; Deputy President (1yr), Boat Captain (4 yrs), Vice Boat Captain (2 yrs) Assistant Secretary/ Competition Secretary (6 yrs), Committee Member (4 yrs), Judicial Committee (4 yrs), Room Steward (2 yrs), Touring Manager (4yrs), Gym Supervisor (1yr), Social Committee (2yrs)

During this time Paul carried out his patrolling duties as required, was always available for Life Savers Appeal Day, major fundraising events including Bulli Workers Club raffle & recently the Bulli Forager Markets plus any carnivals or special events organised by the club. He has previously received the SLSA 25 Years Long Service award.

Competition has always been one of Paul’s strengths, following in his father’s footsteps, some highlights include;

89/90 Illawarra Branch Championships U21 Boat 1st

91/92 Australian Championships Reserve Boat 1st

92 to 97 Illawarra Branch Open Boat Champs (6 yrs)

98/99 Australian representatives George Bass Marathon International Series

99/00 NSW Championships Reserve Boat 1st

03/04 Australian representatives George Bass Marathon International Series

06/07 Australian Championships Reserve Boat 1st

07/08 NSW Championships Life Saver Relay 1st

08/09 Australian Championships Life Saver Relay 3rd

11/12 NSW Championships Open Boat 1st

11/12 World Championships Open Boat 2nd

12/13 Australian Surf Rowers League Open Boat 1st

13/14 NSW Championships Open Boat 1st

13/14 Australian Surf Rowers League Open Boat 1st

13/14 George Bass Marathon Open Boat champs 1st

As mentioned his strength was his surf sports within the boating section (even though as a junior he placed a few times in club championship events), his competitive streak as a rower & sweep is unmatched, his coaching skills as a sweep & organisational skills leading the boat section when Boat Captain was outstanding.

But what it does not show is the hours and hours of training that Paul puts into the training of his crews over the years as well as towing surf boats around the country.

Congratulations Paul Jones, a worthy Life Member of BULLI SLSC!
