NUTRI-GRAIN IRONMAN SERIES @ BULLI
Nutri-Grain IronMan and IronWomen Series Round 3 to be held at Bulli Beach!!!!
Australiaβs iconic Nutri-Grain IronMan and IronWoman racing will return on a bigger scale next summer, with Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) securing a broadcast deal that will breathe new life into the series.
SLSA has taken back the reigns of the Nutri-Grain Series that is synonymous with summer to secure a new broadcast deal as well as partnering with renowned sports promoter and Imagine This founder, Mike Porra.
As part of the new deal with FOX Sports four rounds of the Nutri-Grain Series, as well as the new Nutri-Grain Iron X event will be broadcast live across summer. The gruelling Coolangatta Gold which kicks off the Nutri-Grain Series, will also be broadcast as a highlights package.
In keeping with the long and rich history between two iconic organisations in SLSA and Kelloggβs, Nutri-Grain will again be the naming rights sponsor.
βNutri-Grain encourages young Australians to live unstoppable lives in the pursuit of their dreams, and the Nutri-Grain IronMan and IronWoman Series represents exactly that. Weβre really excited about the addition of the new formats and look forward to continuing our support for our athletesβ said Tamara Howe, Director of Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Kellogg Australia and New Zealand.
Surf Life Saving Australia CEO, Adam Weir, said the organisation is bringing the Nutri-Grain Series back in house while working with experts in the industry to reconnect Australiaβs IronMen and IronWomen with sporting fans.
βThe Nutri-Grain IronMan and IronWomen Series is iconic and we have a brand that connects with many sporting fans from young kids through to traditional sporting followers,β said Weir.
βWe are thrilled that for the first time in more than a decade we will have our elite sporting series live on TV and reaching broader audiences.
βSurf sports plays an important part in raising the profile of Surf Life Saving with many Australians and we want to showcase our elite athletes and their lifesaving skills and athleticism.
βThe Kelloggβs Nutri-Grain Ironmen and Ironwomen are not only the fittest athletes in the country, they are also great surf lifesavers who watch over the beach going public throughout the season.
βWe unashamedly want to build the profile of our surf sports stars, provide opportunities for our commercial partners and work hand in hand with our athletes to connect to young fans and get more kids involved in our sport,β he said.
Six-time Coolangatta Gold champion and a World and Nutri-Grain IronMan Champion, Ali Day has been a part of the discussions for the new format and said that he is excited about what next summer presents.
βI love the Coolie Gold, so Iβm thrilled that itβs included in the new look Nutri-Grain Series. It gives athletes like myself who enjoy the long format, a chance to put points on the board straight off the bat. As for the qualifying process, I think SLSA couldnβt be more spot on, including core athletes, wild cards and up and comers in the mix. By bringing the Nutri-Grain Series directly back under SLSA and as a stand-alone series, has already raised the level of competition and Iβm really looking forward to what the Nutri-Grain Series will bring and seeing who will come out on top,β said Day.
The new look Nutri-Grain Iron Series involves five rounds of Iron racing with the opening round taking place at the iconic Coolangatta Gold. There will also be a standalone Nutri-Grain Iron X event that will add obstacles and new craft elements to the traditional iron racing.
The dates and locations for the new series are as follows:
Qualification Series β 7-8 September 2019 Coolum, QLD
Round 1 β Coolangatta Gold β 13 October 2019 β Coolangatta, QLD
Round 2 β Nutri-Grain Series β 17 November 2019 β Burleigh Heads, QLD
Round 3 β Nutri-Grain Series β 1 December 2019 β Bulli, NSW
Round 4 β Nutri-Grain Series β 15 December 2019 β Surfers Paradise, QLD

Thrown in heaps of unofficial roles & his service to the club has been outstanding. A worthy member who has now joined a club within the club...we now have 37 Life Member's with 19 Life Member's still around in our 106 years of history. RIP those that have gone before us.
It was great to see members of Linc's family there after the announcement to celebrate a milestone in his surf life saving career.
Vale Mal Caldwell RIP
At 2.30am on Monday morning 17 June our oldest member passed away peacefully in Kempsey on the Mid North Coast.
Mal Caldwell (93old) father of Keith (President), father-in-law to Maria (Registrar) grand-father of Jamie (Director of Education) & great grand- father of Taj (Nippers).
Mal with his wife Claire (dec) along with Keith as a 15old moved to live in Woonona & thus beginning the journey as members of Bulli Surf Life Saving Club. Over 44yrs involvement with Bulli SLSC & prior with South West Rocks SLSC (gained his bronze medallion in 1965).
Mal loved the club, watched his son compete & travel all over the country attending State & Aussie Champs. Towed the club gear trailer for many years, assisting on working bees around the club, set up for carnivals, loved the social aspect & meeting new clubbie friends. Always the first & last to leave at carnivals & any social event with Claire.
RIP Mal....gone to the big surf club in the skyπβ€
Dear members & friends,
Celebration of Mal Caldwell 93 years on the planet!
Wednesday 26 June 2019 10am Frederickton Crematorium 8 Everinghams Lane, Frederickton NSW (just north of Kempsey).
Drinks & lunch afterwards at Smithtown Pub.
From President Keith, "Thank you so much to everybody that has sent messages, phoned us & make comments on social media about dad's passing. We have been blown away with the love & support from so many people & our family really appreciates it from the bottom of our hearts. 4 generations of family in the surf club at one time now down to 3 with my son Jamie & his son Taj in nippers. Dad loved the surf club as most would have realised. I have spoken with club members & friends, I mentioned about not getting stressed if you can't make the celebrations, totally understand with costs & work commitments. Some of dad's ashes will be spread off Bulli Beach at a later stage."

Sportsman's Luncheon 3 May - great success
On Friday 3May @ Bulli Workers Club we held our Sportsman's Luncheon.
This is a post event follow up & update on how things went.....
It was a great day supported by our members, friends & sponsors of the club...128 in attendance with guest speakers Trent Waterhouse, Malcolm 'Miracle' Johnston & Duncan Armstrong outstanding along with MC Jared Constable.
As mentioned on the day part proceeds from 2 live auction items will be sent to the Go Fund Me fundraiser for Ross & Andrew Powell of Port Campbell SLSC who tragically lost their lives on Easter Sunday. RIP guys, you are heroes in our eyes.
Thank you to the businesses that supported the event with raffle. silent & live auction items, it was greatly appreciated.
A big thank you to our organising committee of Keith Caldwell, Greg Miller, Simon Jones, Jamie Caldwell & Glen Meznaric for their time & effort in coordinating the day.
We must also mention Sally Fitzgibbons & Trent Salisbury who donated items on the day as well, thank you so much!
A message from Duncan Armstrong OAM Olympian who was one of the guest speakers was really nice of him;
" A heartfelt thanks for inviting me to be part of a great sportsmen lunch with the happy Bulli SLC ‘family’.I thoroughly enjoyed myself from the time I walked into Bulli Workers Club to the time I walked out. Meeting everyone and sharing the stage with Trent and ‘Miracle’ was a privilege, so thank you very much gentlemen for organising all the travel arrangements and making me so welcome. Thanks again fellas and if there is anything I can do for you and the club in future please don’t hesitate to contact me ".
We made some $$$ on the day, it was a success.
Patrols - Red & Yellow Flags down 28 April 2019
On Sunday 28 April the red & yellow flags came down at Bulli Beach for the completion of season 2018-2019.
Patrol Team 1 were on all day on this Sunday – as mentioned the last patrol day of the 2018-19 season. Calm conditions and beautiful weather made it a nice day to be on the beach.
Of behalf of our President Keith Caldwell & Director of Life Saving Markus Meier-Lindner we would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our patrol teams, plus all additional volunteers for your service, help and support to make this season a great success.
The ultimate measure for this is that we can now claim the '106th season with no lives lost whilst our club members have been on patrol'. ππ€©πππ
Our lifesaving leaders in the club were pleased to see heaps of good things happening during the season...namely good shift attendance, wearing of the red & yellow uniform, members organising timely swaps was clearly one of the standout achievements which made sure we had the relevant award qualifications on the beach to service & look after the community.
All this comes about from communications, which we had in bucket loads, members engaged & we thank them for this.
We also had a end of season debrief on Sunday in the club roomsπππππΊπ· with some great ideas/thoughts on how we can continually improve our lifesaving services.
The season in a few snap shots:
- 4,333 volunteer patrolling hours
- 92 patrolling members
- 7 patrol teams
- 15 rescues
- 37 first aid provisions
- 1,105 preventions
- 0 lives lost
Thanks again and enjoy the well deserved winter break...you guys & girls deserve it!π

2019 Aussie Champs @ Gold Coast - Open & Masters
Well that's a wrap 2019 Aussie Champs done & dusted.
It has been challenging for all concerned at the Youth Masters & Open events.
Surf & weather conditions changing over the 8 days of competition, moving between Broadbeach & North Kirra...wow it had everything. Youth Champions at Nort Burleigh.
But that's what surf carnivals are about, having fun, racing in individual & team events, character building & defining moments, building resistance, working as a club to achieve.
To all our athletes be very proud of what you achieved, you are all champions, whether you medal, make a quarter or semi or miss out in a heat. You all represented our club so proudly at these championshipsπ
To all our members thankyou for what you did at these championships, working as officials, towing boat & craft trailers, set up tents, team managers & power craft shifts, parents supporting our athletes...we are a very proud club & will continue to beπ
Some stand out performances included;
* Zara Sharman - 1st U17 Female 2km Ocean Swim
* Jasmine Locke unlucky 4th U17 Female Skiπ’
WOW...this deserves a special mention.
Heart break for Jasmine Locke in the final of the U17 Australian Female Ski today at North Kirra...Jaz clearly the best & strongest paddler led by at least 15m coming into the little deep gully towards the finish line, just slewed a bit on a small wave & came off her ski, she jumped back on & placed a close 4th...everybody on the beach (well us bulli people) felt for her...NSW Champ & looking to be AUS champ.
But you know what she is a champion in our eyes, the way she held her composure after the race, dealt with defeat, she is a credit to her parents Mick & Penny...a lovely young lady in every way.
Jaz your time will come & you will be better for the experience.

NEW BEACH WHEELCHAIR TO GIVE WOLLONGONG LOCALS A NEW LEASE OF LIFE
With the continuing hot weather in Wollongong Nina Crompton is looking forward to testing the new floating beach wheelchair to be launched today by Multiple Sclerosis Limited at Bulli Surf Lifesaving Club.
It marks a huge day for Nina as she has not been able to enjoy the beach since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis five years ago.
“I found out that I had multiple sclerosis in 2013, and the next year it had affected my legs,” she said.
“It’s been a long while since I last visited the beach and I can’t wait to feel the water under my feet and experience the cool sea breeze.”
Multiple Sclerosis Limited has worked with the Bulli Surf Lifesaving Club to give local people with limited mobility the ability to access the newly acquired beach wheelchair and spend a day at the beach with family and friends.
John Blewonski, Chief Executive Officer of Multiple Sclerosis Limited, thanked the Honda Foundation for donating the chair and said that it would be not just for people with MS but also will be available at no cost for others with similar disorders and disabilities.
“This chair is a significant step forward for wheelchair users and will improve their quality of life by getting them back onto the beach and in many cases into the water. It’s important that everyone has the opportunity to live an active and healthy lifestyle regardless of their personal circumstance or physical ability.”
Keith Caldwell, Bulli Surf Lifesaving Club President, said that it was a fantastic initiative by Multiple Sclerosis Limited and that he expected the new equipment will help people with a disability and their families have fun at the beach together.
“We’re lucky to have a beautiful beach and this initiative will ensure that everyone across the Illawarra region will be able to access it.”
Keith said that volunteer lifesavers would be on hand to assist wheelchair users at weekends and public holidays.
“The chairs will be handed over to the hirer for self-use, however our lifesavers will always be there to help out if they can.”
The Mobi Floating Beach Wheelchair (called the Mobi-Chair) is the world’s most popular amphibious rolling beach wheelchair. It provides a seamless transition from a wheelchair to the beach, and from the beach into the ocean.
Bookings for a beach wheelchair can be made by emailing bullisurfclub@gmail.com to arrange a time & date (on weekends & public holidays only)
