Fund Raising - Toilet Paper for Sale
With our DA approved just recently all efforts in fund raising ventures over the next 2 years will be directed towards our building extensions. So far it has cost the club $22,000 in reports & we have just under $40,000 in our Building Fund and need to build on this. Our Management & Building Committee will be out there chasing the corporate dollars along with applying for local/state/federal grants.
Russell Bradley from Milestone Chemicals is kindly assisting us with a fund raising venture, yes every family needs it...toilet paper..we have it for sale.......Beyond Toilet Paper 400 sheet (2ply) x 48 rolls in a carton. A Pallet (32 boxes) will be delivered this Sunday 30 October (9am-11am) and the club will be selling a box for a great price of $35.00.
So let’s see if we can use this as an ongoing activity......we will also have cleaning products down the track as well, plus events to assist in chasing $$$ for our fund.
Orders will be taken future deleveries as well, so let us know if you wish to help, send an email to either mkcaldwell@bigpond.com or bullinippers@gmail.com
We really need our members and friends to support any fundraising events we plan as the benefits will all be coming back to YOU and your kids for the future!
Bronze Proficiency this Sunday
Our 1st Bronze Only Proficiency Date is this Sunday 30 October 10.30am report for a 11am start
Please see our Lifesaving Team who will record your names. There will be a number of further dates advertised next week which all patrolling members & surf sports members MUST COMPLETE so they can patrol the beach & start in events at carnivals.
You will need to put 1.5 hours of your time aside to complete land based proficiency training including resuscitation with oxygen & defibrillation, signals, radio & IRB awareness. There is also the Run Swim Run (200m run-200m swim-200m run) that needs to be completed in 8 minutes, plus showing your skills in a rescue situation with a surf rescue board or rescue tube.
We have an increase in membership this season so your support on the day will be appreciated.
New members who have transferred from other clubs NEED TO COMPLETE THEIR PROFICIENCY THIS SUNDAY prior to the 1st Round of the South Coast Boats & 2nd Round of the Sydney Water Series competitions.
Members doing their Bronze Medallion Course will also complete their proficiency component of the course this Sunday.
DA finally approved by Wollongong City Council
Well our Development Application (DA) with Wollongong City Council has finally been approved.
Cost so far a staggering $22,000 and we haven't even dug a hole! Yes that's right we are a Non-Profit Charity Volunteer Organisation doing a great community service.
Our proposed building extensions on the southern side of the surf club include ground floor storage area for club lifesaving & surf sports equipment plus council lifeguard quad bike & rescue equipment. The 2nd level will have a Secretary's Office, Training & Meeting Room with kitchen facilities, toilets plus disable lift access. The extensions plus upstairs being fully fitted, costs are estimated at $1Million at least.
Discussions at club management level started in October 2010 and initially we had our first DA knocked back & also a Review of that DA knocked back by Wollongong City Council. This application is our 2nd one. So to say it has been frustrating is an understatement.
The club would like to thank Bulli Plan Services (Building Plans, Site Layout & Site Analysis), Detom Planning(Construction Notes) and TCG Planning (Statement of Environmental Effects). Our Member for Heathcote Mr Lee Evanshas also been very supportive to our cause.
The hard work now starts again with Construction Plans to be obtained and of course the very important factor of dollars to make this a reality. Our management team will be on the look out for local/state/federal grants, sponsorship and of course our members will be involved in fund raising activities.
If there are any companies out there that would like to become involved in sponsorship with our building extensions please contact our Club President mkcaldwell@bigpond.com
Ocean Series - boats & skis
A few of our members have been racing in the Ocean Series presented by Surf LIfe Saving Sydney Northern Beaches.
The series is about long distance racing (10kms-20kms) involving surf skis, ocean racing skis & surf boats.
There has been a couple of rounds conducted so far with Hannahn Minogue (1st & 3rd) sitting pretty good overall in the Open Women's Ocean Racing Skis category.
Sean White finished 3rd in the Open Surf Ski category race at Long Reef recently.
Our masters guys (Ian Timbrell & Michael Locke) have both had a win in the 40-49yrs Male Ocean Racing Skis category in the 2 legs so far (Long Reef & Watsons Bay).
Our boats also had a hit out in the Bondi Beach to Watsons Bay Hotel race (12kms) on the weekend. 2 Open Male crews & a Vets Male crew placed 2nd, 4th & 2nd respectively.
The crews were A Crew (Pauul Jones-Dean Roberts-Heath Mercer-Ben Lowe-Dan Porra), B Crew (Lincoln Costello-Paul Barlow-Mitchell Roberts-Matt Roodenrys-Adam Barlow) & Vets (Shane Geloven-Rod Mercer-Chris Mercer-Glen McMillan-Darren Nicholls).
1st Round Sydney Water Premiership Series on this Saturday @ Corrimal
Well the 1st Round of the Sydney Water Premiership Series will happen this Saturday at Corrimal Beach.
It was supposed to be at nearby Towradgi but had to be transferred due to no sand at Towradgi to hold beach events.
The club has close to 30 nipper kids & 30 senior members entered for the series which is conducted over 4 rounds and to be held at the following beaches Corrimal (23 Oct), Shellharbour (12 Nov), North Wollongong (26 Nov) & Warilla (3 Dec).
This weekend should be a good hit out as it is the first carnival for surf/craft & beach competitors. There should be some good racing with fine weather predicted & the surf increasing in size due to the strong north easterly swell.
The NSW Surf Life Saving High Performance Squad are in camp over this weekend & will also be competing at Corrimal, so the standard of racing should be strong even for this early part of the season.
Report Time 8am for Juniors (Nippers)
Report Time 12midday for Seniors
Good luck to everybody that is racing this weekend.
Record Numbers doing Lifesaving Course
Last Sunday we had 31 members start our 1st Surf Rescue Certificate & Bronze Medallion Course at Bulli Beach. The course will run for a couple of Sundays in October and hopefully all participants will meet the standard requirements and become important members of our club in lifesaving.
There are a few nipper parents doing their SRC & Bronze and this will assist our water safety requirements at Sunday nippers & surf carnivals.
All others on the the course will be placed on a Patrol Roster and assist with voluntary patrols during the 2011-2012 season.
River Run Surf Boat Marathon - Results
Our 2 crews obtained great results in the River Run Boat Marathon (12 kms along the Georges River Sydney) last weekend.
The A crew (Paul Jones-Heath Mercer- Dean Roberts-Ben Lowe-Adam Barlow) finished a close 2nd to the North Cronulla crew. The boys were pretty happy with how they went as they have only been in the boat on 3 occasions since training started...but there has been a heap of work in the gym and on the erg rowing machines. The North Cronulla crew is said to be made up of stillwater rowers so the result was very promising.
The B Crew (Barry Lowe-Paul Barlow-Sam Barlow-Mitchell Roberts-Matt Bowen) won the Reserve section of the marathon and on completed times actually finished 3rd in the A section. Not a bad effort for guys who hadn't been in the boat together at all this season.
This season looks to be a big year for our Boat Section in numbers as it looks as though there will be a possiblity of 10 crews (record numbers) rowing in the maroon & gold colours;
Men's - A crew & 2 Reserve crews, 2 x U23 crews, 1 x U19 crew & 1 Vets crew
Ladies - A crew & 2 x U23 crews
Crew selections to be still sorted but a heap of members putting their hand up to gain selection in the above crews.

Coolangatta Gold results
Well the Gold has been run & won and our members didn't fair too bad.
In the individual stakes Kimberley Fleming finished 2nd in her Female Masters category & Hannah Minogue finished 19th in the Open Female section.
Kimberley said, " It was the hardest event I have ever done. I used to race mountain bikes and this was harder than a 100km mountain ride in the mud & wet. I played mind games to stay on track. " Kimberley was physically sick a number of times during the event & her body showed signs of extreme wear and tear (her knees & stomach region had chaffed skin, bleeding, grazed & blistered). Hannah on the other hand was happy to finish the event, stating, " I blew up in the first 1km of the ski, then it was a matter of survival. I hadn't run for over a month with my injured ankle and it showed."
Othe members that participated in team events included Beau Wheeler (1st), Lachlan O'Grady (2nd), Penny Locke (8th), Michael Locke/Drew Cairncross (7th) & Sean White/Oscar Bradley/Mitchell Fagerstrom (8th).
Information was also got from a reliable source that prior to the event the young bulls namely Mitch/Sean/Oscar wished to place a little wager on the result in the Open Men's Team event. So the older bulls team (Michael/Drew) took up the challenge and came away with the prize just finishing in front of the younger guys.....the prize....a carton of beer & duly awarded to the older bulls at the BBQ on the Sunday.
Kiah Taylor also placed 10th in the U14 Coolangatta Gold (double normal distance of iron-person course- M shape ).
Both Mali Taylor & Coen Taylor did the Ky Hurst Ocean Swim, finishing 1st female 12yrs & under swim (300m) & 3rd male 12yrs & under swim respectively.
Senior Surf/Craft training - change of times
Senior Surf/Craft training will now be held at 5pm on Wednesday(Board), Thursday(Ski) & Friday's (Board) at Bulli Beach.
Illawarra Ski training is still happening at 4pm on Tuesday's at Wollongong Harbour.
Please bring extra training gear (joggers etc) to all sessions if unable to train in the surf.
Well done members - 2011 Cancer Council Relay for Life!
Extreme Weather = Extreme Determination
On Saturday 24 September 2011 the Bulli Surf Club Team participated in the 2011 Illawarra ‘Relay for Life’ at the Keryn McCann Athletics Centre, Beaton Park. The 24 hour event was to raise funds for the Cancer Council and our team participated wholeheartedly in every aspect of the event despite the rain and chilly weather. Even when tents started to flood, a few team members decided to stay overnight despite being very uncomfortable - they were Keryn Morris, Jesse Morris, Katelyn Moore, Ellie Yates and Ellyse Heycott.
Prior to the relay the team collected donations both on-line and by cash to contribute to our goal of $1,800.00. At the event we held a stall selling used books and lollies to add to the fundraising total and due to the weather this was not as successful as we had hoped but throughout the day there was always someone manning the stall just in case we got a sale.
The team were great ambassadors for our club and at no time did they ever lose sight of the importance of the event not only to the local community but to the cause in general. This can be seen by the people who joined our team at late notice when they witnessed the determination of other team members and also by some who had other plans cancelled and were able to attend.
The result being that we have raised a total of $2,047.00 in on-line and cash donations. WOW!!!! this amount exceeds our goal – I am so proud of the team and the many people who sponsored us for the event.
So I would like to thank the team:
Original Team
Wayne Heycott, Brian Morris, Keryn Morris, Leanne Lunney, Mikayla Morris, Kyle Heycott, Lachlan Hand, Jesse Morris, Lakeisha Graham-Jackson, Ellyse Heycott, Emma Brown, Katelyn Moore, Ellie Yates, Josh Gordon, Connor Basham, Joel Meznaric, Bryar Lunney and Kiara Lunney.
Last Minute Team Members
Natalie Jackson, Logan Jackson, Zane Jackson, Jayden Jackson, Peta Lunney, Alison Hand, Emma Lockhart, Bridgette Lockhart and Chloe Spendlove.
Special Thanks go to:
Brian Morris and Wayne Heycott - for the setup, packing up, ensuring we had enough supplies and the many laps they completed....they were great especially in the torrential rain on Sunday.
Alison Hand – who came back early Sunday to continue walking laps with Lachlan (in torrential rain) to ensure our team was on the track...and for assisting with the pack up.
Glen and Tracey Meznaric – who constantly attended the event throughout the entire time to ensure that we did not need anything and for the pack up in the rain on Sunday - it is very much appreciated.
Natalie, Logan, Zane and Jayden Jackson – for joining the team on the day, for walking lots of laps, for assisting with the stall, packing up on Sunday and for their never ending enthusiasm throughout the event...it was great!
Leanne Lunney – who was there at the beginning, went home for a spell and then returned at 2.00am to walk laps for our team for about 3 or so hours....Leanne...you are amazing! I do not think that many people would have left their warm cosy beds on a cold, rainy night to assist the team!!
Keith and Maria Caldwell – for their support, assistance and especially their encouragement for the team to participate in this event!
HOWEVER...this year my very special thank you goes to Keryn Morris...what can I can say...Keryn was on board right from the start, kept in constant contact with me to discuss strategies etc, raised money, helped with setting up and packing up...kept my spirits up when the rain came down and the team were struggling and who supported me every step of the way...thank you so much I really appreciate it!
Once again our inspiration was:
“Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something.”
and for the second year running Bulli Surf Club proved it!!!
Thanks

From beach to track.....our gun young beach competitor Ashley Dribbus has continued on with her red hot form from last summer with selection in the NSW Schools Athletics Team that contested the School Sport Australia 12 Years & Under Track & Field Championships in Darwin recently (15-19 Sept 2011).
She won the 10 Years 100m & 200m sprint finals in personal best times of 13.9sec (100m) and 28.5sec (200m) respectively. She also won another gold medal in the 4 x 100m relay with the NSW Team victorious. Just for good measure she also finished 2nd in the Long Jump event.

9 days until Cancer Council Relay for Life - Bulli Team is excited!
Team Bulli
Well it is only 9 days to go to the big event and our shirts for the event were picked up last night - it is getting exciting ...hope you are all still looking forward to it...I know I am!!..WARNING...this is a very long email with lots of information but it is all very important.
We set our fundraising goal at $1800.00 this year as we quite easily passed our goal of $1500.00 last year and to date we have $510.00 in online donations...well done!!
Our leading fundraiser so far is Lakeisha Graham-Jackson with $160.00, Connor Basham in second place with $115.00 and Josh Gordon in third with $40.00. Please note that this is only in online donations...so if you have raised money by cash/cheque...please let me know so I can keep the rest of the team informed.
I know it can be difficult to raise money, so chin up, stay positive and do the best job that you can do as every donation counts towards raising money for this worthy cause. To add to our goal we will be selling lollies and used books at the event so if you have any old books in good condition please let me know.
For any of the team that are staying overnight you will need a tent to sleep in...some team members have already advised that they have two man tents which are perfect as they do not take up too much room. The surf club will also be supplying one of the clubs carnival tents to set up our stall and be our main area to relax between laps.
So over the next 9 days please refer to the following check list to ensure that you are ready for the event:
* Continue Fundraising * Decide what times you are available for the event and let me know * Gather together any used books that you would like to sell * If you are staying overnight please let me know so we can ensure there are enough tents to sleep in * Get a bit of endurance walking practice in....only joking...but you never know it may help you on the day!
On the day of the event:
* Be there for team photo at 9.00am ( you can leave after this if you cannot stay and return when it suits)
* Bring entry fee so that I can collect it and ensure that all of us are paid for
* Pack a variety of clothes...shorts, trackies etc in case of a change of weather
* Wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes
* Pack healthy snacks/fruit etc to sustain your energy & money to purchase any other food that you may need...the prices are always quite reasonable
* Wear a Bulli Surf Club Baseball cap to identify our team to the public..anyone who does not have a cap please let me know so I can arrange one for you?
* Pack sunscreen as you can get quite burnt over the duration of the relay
* Bring a fold up chair to relax on when you are not doing laps & pack a reuseable water bottle as cool pure filtered water is provided throughout the event to all participants for free
* If staying overnight...bring tent if needed, something warm to sleep in, sleeping bag and whatever else you may need
We also would love to see your family and friends if they wish to come visit, walk a few laps with you or even bring in something as a treat for the team - any form of support will be greatly appreciate.
If anyone out there in the community would like to support TEAM BULLI please feel free to contact me on the email address below.
Thanks

2011-2012 Office Holders
Our Annual General Meeting was held last Sunday in the surf club meeting room to elect our office holders for the 2011-2012 season.
Concerns were held that we might have a lack of numbers due to the Shamrocks Rugby Union Football Club having a deferred game allocated on the day, members at the Nutri Grain trails in Noosa and some usual attendees unavailable due to social/work commitments. Well we didn't need to worry with over 40 people attending on the day.
The 2010-2011 Annual Report was available and thanks must go to Barry/Denise Adams, Keith Caldwell & Brad/Sarah at Colour Print Solutions for putting the report together.
Getting back to the election of office holders, Keith Caldwell was elected un-opposed as President and will lead an enthuastic executive & management committee. There were a few changes, most notably ones being in our Lifesaving section, with Jake Hogarth stepping up as Club Captain. It has been a long time since we have had a young 21 old as Club Captain with the past years our patrols being looked after by previous Club Captains such as Paul Hennessy, Paul Brightwell & Noel Freeman. Everybody was impressed at the meeting about Jake's involvement in club activities over the past few years and many believe he will do an excellent job.
The club has also decided to run with 2 Vice Club Captains, Jamie Caldwell with last years Club Person of the Year Dave Greene stepping up to the mark to lend their expertise within our Lifesaving ranks. Al Green and Wayne Heycott, 2 hard working members have taken on the roles of IRB/ATV Captain & Vice Captain respectively.
The big change in the Junior Activities Section sees Peter Lord taking over from Leanne Lunney. Peter is very keen to continue the great work that Leanne did in her 2 years as the Junior Chair-Person.
