Bulli Boys dominant George Bass Surf Boat Marathon & Ski Marathon
RESULTS OF THE "NAVY" GEORGE BASS SURF BOAT & "DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG" SKI MARATHON HELD DOWN ON THE FAR SOUTH COAST OF NSW only last week.
The event started on the 1st January underneath the bridge at Bateman’s Bay with 7 days of rowing & ski paddling distances from 19km to 36km each day resulting in battered & bruised bodies, sun burn, dehydration, blisters on hands & bottoms, plus mental & physical fatigue.
Well talk about 2 dominant displays.....our Male Veteran’s crew & Michael Locke (ski paddler) showed all class in winning their respective category within the race.
The Vet’s won 5 legs and placed 2nd & 3rd respectively in the 7 legs rowed down the coast from Bateman’s Bay to Eden, a total of 181kms. On times our guys would have finished 2nd in the Open Men's Division.
Michael recorded 6 wins & placed 2nd on the other occasion, also breaking a few race records along the way.
Veteran’s crew was Shane Geloven (sweep), Craig Lunney, Peter McLaren, Kingsley Baker, Jason Sparkes, Rod Mercer, Chris Mercer, Darren Nicholls & Glen MacMillan.
Thankyou to all the supporters & back up staff who helped with set up of camp sites, meal preparation, driving of boat trailers, drinks & ice runs and the list goes on. To the sponsors that supported our club with clothing & fuel costs a massive thanks as we couldn't have achieved these results without your funding.
Massive thanks to the support boat drivers who shared their duties (Garry Horne & Mal Moon) and of course Michael Moon who made his boat available in the first place.
Special mention on Chris Mercer who rowed in his 13th George Bass Marathon (only 17 have been held & Bulli didn’t row in those)....not a bad effort for a 58 year old Hall of Fame Rower.

Boatie wins Xmas Handicap Swim
56 swimmers greeted the starter on Xmas Day for the Annual Xmas Day Handicap Swim. Members aged from U9 through to Veterans lined up on a sunny morning to have a social swim around 2 bouys approximately 150 metres from shore. As usual there were a number of protests from swimmers prior to the event concerning their handicaps, unfortunately for them no one took any notice!
This year we had a sprinkling of surf club members from local clubs Sandon Point SLSC, Towradgi SLSC & Corrimal SLSC participate. We also had two young blokes namely Daniel Homer (U17) & Matt Homer (U14) from Nobby's Beach SLSC Queensland also had a swim & didn't they collect......finishing 2nd & 3rd respectively! Both boys are the son's of 'Ace' & Kerry Homer.....being formerly Kerry Jones, sister of Paul Jones our A sweep & daughter of Life Member Russ Jones.
Winner on the day though was Isaak Lunney.....yes a 1st year boat rower in the U19's. There was mention about his handicap not being higher enough and I am sure the handicapper will look into it next year.
Congratulations to Noel Freeman on having his 41st consecutive Xmas Day swim.....talk about commitment!

Rd 2 of Ocean Thunder Boat Series
Round 2 of the Schick Hydro Ocean Thunder Pro Surfboat Series has been contested in glorious conditions at Sydneys Dee Why beach on Saturday 17 December. Huey blessed competitors and spectators with three metre rolling waves that were absolutely perfect for competition amongst the best surf rowing crews in Australia.
The large crowd lined the steps of natural Dee Why ampitheatre and were left in awe of the skill shown by the Men and Women from all over Australia drawn to the $60,000.00 in prizemoney and the chance to showcase their skills to a worldwide televsion audience. According to event spokesperson Julie Anderson "the conditions were the biggest and cleanest we have experienced in six years of racing Ocean Thunder at Dee Why, the whole beach was in awe today as Australias best surf boat crews were given the opportunity to highlight their enormous skills to not only the large crowd but to the televsion cameras as well".
Despite the huge conditions, damage to craft and competitors was very low highlighting the experience and skill of Australia's best surf rowing crews.
The epic mens final was contested by Australian Cable Tray Systems (Manly), St George Leagues Club (Bulli), Culligan Water (Bilgola), Dial Before You Dig (Mona Vale), Reilly & Sons Food Services/Mammoth (Bungan) and Southern Fasteners (North Cronulla) with the whole field having one eye on event one winners Don McManus' Culligan Water (Bilgola).
The St George Leagues Club Bulli crew of Paul Jones sweep, Dean Roberts, Heath Mercer, Ben Lowe, Dan Porra and Mitch Roberts (reserve) can certainly vouch for that after thinking they were safe in their warm up row only to be cleaned up by a monster set peeling around Dee Why point some 250meters offshore – ouch! But the boys recovered and performed very well all day, with a 5th place finish in the final.
After the 6 rounds of round robin racing, the crew were placed 5th (out of 24 crews) finishing the preliminaries with 4 x 1st and 2 x 4th placings. It was touch and go for a little while as you need to steer clear of the 4th place spots with only 4 boats in each heat. But after some very strong words of encouragement between each other, the crew finished the last 2 rounds of round robin racing with 2 victories pushing them into the 5th qualifying spot. The top 12 crews then faced elimination with our boys showing good surf skills and with the boat speed they already posses were able to make it all the way to the 6 boat final.
With the series now at the half way mark with 2 rounds remaining, the St George Leagues Club Bulli crew are 5th overall and with every chance to get onto the podium at series end, the crew will be going in with renewed confidence when Round 3 is contested on 14th January.
The top 6 standings after Round 2:
Bilgola (24)
Mona Vale (20)
Manly (19)
Bungan Beach (18)
St George Leagues Club Bulli (17)
North Cronulla (16)
These 6 crews contested the final last Saturday and are likely to be fighting it out in the final 2 rounds.
Cool Santa turns up at Nippers Xmas Party!
Well i98fm cancelled the Summer Festival Search Party at the beach yesterday due to weather conditions? ......but BULLI NIPPERS still went ahead with our Xmas Party. Fun was the theme for the day with kids involved in many games & activities after which they had a sausage sizzle, drink & lolly bag plus cup cakes for sale. A big thank-you to Bernadette Cardillo (our expert cup cake designer) who did a great job decerating the cakes that mothers of some of our nippers made. Thanks to those ladies and of course Julie Heycott and the rookies for having the idea. Over $488 was raised towards the end of season rookie trip & our club building fund.....well done to everybody involved!
You guessed it......a ' cool ' Santa arrived in the ATV with our patrol member Wayne Heycott. Santa had sunglasses on....and his motto was 'slip slop slap & eyeshade from the harmful sun-rays'.
Santa proceeded to hand out the lolly bags and get his photo taken with kids.....and parents....and water safety....and patrol members. I think Santa was seen at the Bulli Workers Club later that night having a rest from all his hard work earlier in the day and having cool ale!
End of the day result - An enjoyable time by all that attended the afternoon Xmas Party, check out the photos in the photo gallery.

Bulli kids race strong at NSW Inter-Branch Championships
The 2011 NSW Inter-Branch Championships were held over the weekend at Rehead Beach in the Newcastle area. Very testing conditions made for interesting racing with a strong southerly sweep and washing machine conditions with a 3ft-4ft surf running adding to the excitement.
Oscar Bradley had to withdraw from the team during the week to a virus and Sean White stepped into his shoes and performed well. Bernadette Cardillo also was suffering from a mystery bug with a severe chest infection also causing her to withdraw from the team.
Our 15 members contested individual & team events and helped Illawarrra Surf Life Saving jump back up to 5th spot in the point-score, knocking off South Coast for that placing.
Some strong individual performances and top 6 finishes were recorded by;
* Mitchell Fagerstrom - 1st Open Male Surf & 5th Open Iron-person
* Hannah Minogue - 1st Open Female Ski, 2nd Open Female Board & 3rd Open Female Surf
* Lachlan O'Grady - 2nd U17 Male Ski, 3rd U17 Male Surf & 5th U17 Iron-person
* Mali Taylor - 5th U13 Iron-person
* Elizabeth Crilley - 5th U19 Female Ski
* Emma Lockhart - 6th U19 Iron-person
Again well done again to Mitch Fagerstrom (Co-Capt), Sean White, Hannah Minogue (Co-Capt), Carly Fagerstrom, Emma Lockhart, Elizabeth Crilley, Ryan O'Grady, Beau Wheeler, Jamie Brinkworth, Lachlan O'Grady, Bridgette Lockhart, Kiah Taylor, Bryar Lunney, Mali Taylor & Phoebe Basham on their efforts & selection.
3 members selected in NSW Teams
Congratulations to Hannah Minogue & Mitchell Fagerstrom on their selection in respective NSW Surf Life Saving Teams.
As a result of their consistent performances so far this season and some great results at the NSW Inter-Branch Championships at Redhead over the weekend, Hannah has gained selection the NSW Inter-State Team & Mitch has made the NSW U21 Development Team.
For Hannah this is a great reward for her committed training & results. She will compete as part of a very strong NSW Team at the 2012 SLSA Inter-State Championships to be contested at Homebush Aquatic Centre on Sunday 22 January 2012 (Pool Rescue events) & Queenscliff Monday 23 January 2012 (Surf/Beach events). The team will go into camp on the Thursday evening in readiness for the championships. Keith Caldwell has also grabbed a gig as an Assistant Team Manager for the NSW Team at these championships.
Mitchell is off to the beautiful Mount Maunganui in New Zealand as part of the NSW Surf Life Saving U21 Development Team that will contest the 2012 Lion Foundation Open Surf League on Saturday 11 February & Sunday 12 February 2012. NZ's leading competitors from each region contest this event with a seperate U19 & Open competition format happening over the 2 days where the NSW Team will get an opportunity to race against NZ's best.
The club congratulates our members on this proud achievement!
Downie Langthorne wins NSW Sports Volunteer Award
Downie Langthorne our Head Senior Surf/Craft Coach was named 'Coach of the Year' at the annual NSW Sports Volunteer Awards in Sydney this week.
This caps a trifecta of awards after being named Illawarra & NSW Surf Life Saving Coach of the Year at their recent Awards of Excellence nights. The awards are based on last seasons achievements.
Downie coaches our senior athletes in surf/craft/pool rescue events and the squad ranges in age from 14 years to 44 years.
Chris Parker SLSNSW Surfs Sports Manager said, "He doesn't place the emphasis only on winning, but also assists his athletes to achieve their personal best. Downie really relates to young athletes and has the respect of both parents and athletes."
The club congratulates Downie on his achievements as he continues to coach our athletes this season with some great results already.
Surf/Craft squad goes well at Terrigal
Well the last round of the East Coast Surf Festival was held at Terrigal last Sunday. Whilst it was pouring rain down in the Illawarra, it was a bright sunny day for half the carnival until the southerly hit.
Our Surf/Craft Coach Big Downie Langthorne drove our gear trailer up and and it was great to see him at his first carnival of the year. Downie has recently changed jobs and is working most Saturdays and has also just moved house...so he has been a busy boy. But those who know him, he is a great coach, a quiet achiever and in his own way got some of our squad to go in more events than they expected. He was seen having quiet whispers to all his charges throughout the day with encouragement and support, talking with parents and assisting with craft handling duties.
Results were pretty outstanding with the squad that attended Terrigal with Hannah Minogue on fire with a 1st in the Open Female Board & Ski, plus a 2nd in the Open Iron-person.
Mitchell Fagerstrom produced a great swim to win the Open Male Surf (won the double as he won Saturday at Warilla) and produced some solid performances in the board & iron-person. He team with Hannah Minogue & Beau Wheeler to win the Open Mixed Taplin Relay & Sean White, Lachlan O'Grady & Jamie Brinkworth our second team placing 5th.
Lachlan O'Grady also continues to produce consistent performances with a 1st in the U17 Iron-person, 2nd in the U17 Male Ski & 3rd in the U17 Male Surf. He also got 2nd in the Open Iron-person.
Beau Wheeler got 2nd in the U19 Male Surf & a 3rd in the U19 Iron-person.
Jamie Brinkworth, Sean White, Emma Lockhart & Carly Fagerstrom also put in a solid day of racing in their respective events.
Our younger girls (U15's) went really well & all of them loved it - good competition - enjoyed the experience and will be back for more next year. Kiah Taylor (U14), Bridgette Lockhart & Emma Brown all made the board final and put in some top efforts in the swim & iron-person.
Good results at Corrimal & Warilla
The final round of the 2011 Sydney Water Surf Premiership Series was held today at Warilla Beach. Some fine individual peformances were recorded by a few of our senior surf/craft members. Wins to Lachlan O'Grady (U17 Male Surf), Mitchell Fagerstrom (Open Male Surf), Hannah Minogue (Open Female Ski) & Jamie Brinkworth (U17 Female Ski). Lachlan O'Grady also placed 3rd in the U17 Ironperson & U17 Ski . Just finishing behind Mitch in the Open Male Surf and in the top 6 were Beau Wheeler (4th), Oscar Bradley (5th) & Lachlan O'Grady (6th). Emma Lockhart got a 6th in the Open Female Surf.
Our U15 girls also raced well with Bridgette Lockhart gaining 3rd in the U15 Ironperson & a 5th in the U15 Female Surf along with Emma Brown & Abbey Dawson finishing top 10 in their respective board, swim & ironperson events. Dale Dawson (U17) also finished 9th in the U17 board final. Lakeisha Jackson also placed 7th in the U17 Female spint final.
In the Overall Individual Point-Score events Lachlan O'Grady capped off a great day with a 2nd in the U17 Male Water points. Mitchell Fagerstrom gained 2nd in the Overall Open Male Swim points & Hannah Minogue a 3rd in the Open Female Ski points.
Our Boats raced at Corrimal in the 2nd round of the South Coast Boat Series and had some pretty fair results with a few of the crews recording wins during the course of the early rounds (Open Men's A crew, Open Women's A crew, Reserve Men's crew & the U19 Men's crew). 8 crews rowing on the day and putting the club in a good position in the overall club point-score.
Our Men's A crew had 3 good earlier rows to gain 2 wins & 1 second in the round robin format defeating Austinmer on 2 occasions & finishing 2nd to Austinmer before leading the final only to be caught by Austinmer on a wave and settle for 2nd prize.
Our Women's A crew placed 4th in the final with some problems at the start not helping their cause. Our 2 x Reserve Men's crews finished 2nd & 4th respectively in their final, with our 2 x U23 Women's crews placing 3rd & 4th respectively. Our young U19 Men's crew rowed a great race to finish 3rd in the final and our U23 Men's crew unlucky not to gain enough points for a finals berth.
A busy day for our 2 sweeps Paul Jones & Barry Lowe with Shane Geloven (Bucks Party) & Lincoln Costello on the mend from a serious illness (blood clot to the lung). The club wishes Lincoln a speedy recovery.....a bit of R & R for him over the Christmas period I am sure.
Good Luck to our Surf Sports Athletes this weekend
This weekend is a busy time for our surf sports athletes with our boaties racing in the 2nd round of the South Coast Boat Series at Corrimal on the Saturday.
Our Men's A crew will be out for some revenge on arch rivals Austinmer who gained selection in the Illawarra Branch Team as the men's boat crew. How this was decided is a bit of a joke with both Bulli & Austinmer 1 win each from the first round of the South Coast Boat Series (Bulli won at Woonona) and the Mollymook carnival (Austinmer finished 3rd & Bulli 5th)...so they are 1 win apiece and usually the selectors have taken in the Ocean Thunder Series into account because Austinmer have gone better than our guys......but not this year as our guys sit 5th in the point-score against some of the best crews in Australia and Austinmer are not in it....go figure? There is the round this weekend at Corrimal and the crew selection could have been done there.....who ever wins...well they make it...common sense it seems but not in some eyes.
Good luck to the rest of our crews won encountered some messy & big surf at Mollymook last weekend, our U19's guys finished 2nd & our Reserve Crew (former A crew rowers) finished 4th. Our U23 girls crew had their first competitve row and safely safely by our experienced sweep Paul Jones got them home in the final...unplaced but they finished!
Our Surf/Craft/Beach team will contest the final round of the Sydney Water Series at Warilla after last week's round was cancelled at North Wollongong. Some of our senior guys & girls have been racing consistantly well in the series including Mitchell Fagerstrom, Hannah Minogue, Beau Wheeler, Lachlan O'Grady & Jamie Brinkworth. Our U15's are also enoying the racing & putting up some good performances along with the rest of our U17 girls & guys.
Most of the senior squad will also be racing on Sunday at Terrigal in the final round of the East Coast Surf Festival after last week's efforts at Dixon Park where some great results were obtained. Hannah Minogue winning the Open Female Ski & she then teamed with Mitch Fagerstrom & Beau Wheeler and they won the Open taplin Relay just to name a few.
Good luck to everybody.

St George Leagues Club A Crew row strongly in Ocean Thunder 1st Rd
Event one of the Schick Hydro Ocean Thunder Series has been run and won last Saturday (12/11/2011)in tiny surf conditions on Sydney's Dee Why Beach.
The 'St George Leagues Club' (Bulli) Ocean Thunder crew of Paul Jones (sweep), Dean Roberts, Heath Mercer, Ben Lowe, Dan Porra and Mitch Roberts rowed eight races to reach the Semi Final.
The competition was hot, with Australia's best surf rowing crews battling out for big prize money in front of a smallish crowd kept away by the overcast conditions and small surf.
During the morning preliminary rounds of the Men's series, Southern Fasteners (North Cronulla) and reigning Australian and Ocean Thunder champions Dial Before You Dig (Mona Vale) were dominant, both winning an incredible five of their six races with only a second placing ruining two potential perfect mornings.
Culligan Water (Bilgola), Australian Cable Tray Systems (Manly), Reilly and Sons Foods Services/Mammoth (Bungan), St George Leagues Club (Bulli), Starrett (Batemans Bay), Stockland (Currumbin), Westrac (North Cottesloe) and Bisley Workwear (South Maroubra) rounded out the mornings top ten.
Our guys were very consistant all day with 5 x 1st places, 2 x 2nd places and 2 x 3rd places. There were two semi finals consisting of six crews in one semi and five crews in the other with two crews to go through to the final. Our guys were in the semi of six crews but were just pipped by a finger nail finishing third and just missing out on the final.
But overall a very impressive performance on the day by our crew certainly had the beach talking.
Northcliffe knocked us out…good work from lane 1 to our lane 4…no lovin on the way home in that lane especially in a flat surf and NE wind. With a wave on it’s probably the lane to have. The final finished in lane order and in almost perfect single file . Lane 1 = Bilgola, Lane 2 = Mona Vale, Lane 3 = Lorne, Lane 4 (closest to the rocks at Dee Why) = Northcliffe.
The crew sit in equal 5th position in the point-score with another 3 rounds to contest.
Welcome to new sponsor EICKHOFF AUSTRALIA PTY LTD
Bulli Surf Life Saving Club would like to welcome on board for the 2011-2012 Eickhoff Australia Pty Ltd as a GOLD SPONSOR.
Eickhoff Australia Pty Ltd has been a registered company in Australia since 1981 and currently offers a sales, maintenance and refurbishment service to our customers who operate a fleet of shearer loaders at 10 mines within the Australian coal industry representing 40% of the total operable shearer loader fleet within the country.
Eickhoff’s focus is longwall mining - a form of underground coal mining where a long wall of coal is mined in a single slice (typically 1m thick and between 2 to 5m high). The block of coal that is being mined (called the ‘longwall panel’) is typically 3-4 km long and 250-400 metres wide.
Geoff Newby (Deputy Manager) welcomed the chance to align with Bulli Surf Life Saving Club. A high priority within Geoff’s role is a focus on the continuation of strengthening the company’s relationships with its customers, as well as improved response times throughout the country and maintaining a strong presence in the local community in supporting voluntary organisations.
"The company is in a steady growth-phase, having recently extended their Braemar refurbishment facility South West of Sydney by 30% in order to facilitate the growing fleet of Eickhoff shearer loaders in Australia. We would like to get our name out in the community and saw Bulli Surf Club as a way of promoting our company in an area surrounded by the mining industry"
Keith Caldwell President of Bulli Surf Club said, "We have a heap of members that work in the mining industry and welcome Eickhoff Australia as a Gold Sponsor of the club. I am sure we can assist Eickhoff Australia with exposure to the greater community through our exploits in lifesaving and surf sports. We have always tried to make sure that our sponsors are kept informed of club activities and made feel a part of our great family club. I look forward to a long and lasting relationship with Eickhoff Australia."
HISTORY ABOUT EICKHOFF: Gebr. Eickhoff GmbH (the parent company) was established in Bochum in 1864 by the Eickhoff family and has remained a family owned and managed business since that time. The nature of the business has grown over the last 145 years from manufacturing mining machinery initially within the large mining area of Germany to the establishment of daughter companies in the major International coal mining regions of the world where the sale and support of the parent company manufactured Shearer Loader fleet is managed.
Crews row strongly 1st Rd South Coast Boat Series @ Woonona
Well our crews have started the season strongly with some great performances in the 1st Rd of the South Coast Boat Series @ Woonona.
Due to conditions the organisers made the right decision to cut out a round robin – 2 round robins instead of 3. Top 6 point scorer’s in each division after 2 round robins into final (although all divisions didn't have 6 in their final due to low numbers and testing conditions)
We had 6 crews compete (out of 9 maximum). The 2 x u23 Women's crews did not contest due to the conditions with their sweeps making the right call, taking into account duty of care, plus our male veteran crew had other commitments on this weekend.
Two of Bulli's best surf/craft members have made the transition to boat rowing. Brittany Sharkey & Matt Freeman, both former AUSTRALIAN Reps & National Champions in the Open Female & Male Belt made their debut last weekend. The club also had a few other members make their rowing debut & really handled it well....congratulations to all concerned including the sweeps for their efforts so far!
Paul Jones (Sweep for the A Male & Female Crews) decided to line up with the Open Women but very conservative just to get them out and back safely – which they were successful in doing so – good enough to get in the final where they finished 4th......great job girls with Ashley Unicomb also making her rowing debut!
The Reserve Gold (Lincoln Costello as sweep) won both their round robins and placed an unlucky 3rd in final. Matt Freeman making his debut as a boat rower with esteem considering how well they went was a surprise for some. This crew seemed to attract the waves coming home in all their races and with Lincoln showed some very good skills on all occasions.
The Reserve “Blumpkins” (Shane Geloven as sweep) which had members who formerly were the clubs A crew from 2009 and 2010 placed 1st in the final, with a 1st and a 3rd in the round robins.
Our U19’s Male crew(Shane Geloven as sweep) also making their debuts had one of those days which you would like to forget, but in the same breath understood what surf boat rowing is all about. They faced some mountains in round 1 and got a dose of what it’s like to get smashed - DNF. In round 2 were DQ’d (wrong gate can – Shane not happy!). So, an uneventful first competition row for these boys but they showed enough to be in the mix next time with some luck.
Our U23 Men (Lincoln Costello as sweep) placed 3rd in the final with a couple of guys in this crew making their rowing debuts.
Our Open Men's A crew (Paul Jones as sweep) won all their rows quite easily and looked very impressive and look set for a bumper season.
Over 50 rowers & supporters headed to Bulli Workers Club after the carnival & had a few drinks & a BBQ. A special presentation was made to Adam Barlow, who recently resigned due to family & work commitments as Boat Captain after 6 seasons running the show. Adam has been an inspiration to all rowers with his commitment to the club as boat captain, rower, patrolling member, committee member, social organiser involved in fundraising & sponsorship. Adam is still going to have a row this season.....he was part of the Reserve Crew that won the final.
Finally good luck to our ' St George Leagues Club' Men's A crew that will be contesting the 1st Round of the Ocean Thunder Boast Series at Dee Why this Saturday starting at 8am.
